The return of the Polaroid slated for 2010

It was only about a year ago that we heard the news: Polaroid was stopping production of its iconic instant film -- it hasn't produced the cameras for nearly three years. But take heart Polaroid addicts and hoarders of the old film: instant film is making its big return in 2010. The Impossible Project ("The Re-Invention of Instant Film") has acquired all Polaroid's old equipment, leased its factory, and will be bringing back analog integral film for Polaroid cameras.

I feel as if an entire artistic medium has been reborn; my heart catches in my throat. It won't be called Polaroid, and will in fact be different film entirely; the team announces their aim, to "develop a new product with new characteristics, consisting of new optimised components, produced with a streamlined modern setup."

In a strong statement of victory for people who love their work, the team consists mostly of those who have worked producing Polaroid film for decades; and the site includes a sign-up form for interested photographers and Polaroid lovers to get involved to support the project. How can you help? We don't know yet, but we're sure looking forward to doing what we can to bring back one of the most fun, most rewarding ways to interact with cameras and art.
