Major department stores throughout the country are offering free makeup Tuesday, Jan. 20, to customers who previously bought their cosmetics, as part of a $175 million class action lawsuit settlement.
The free cosmetics will be given away while supplies last, for up to seven days.

Details can be found at cosmeticssettlement.com.
Stores giving the freebies include Bloomingdales, Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue and Dillard's, among others.
Several major manufacturers are in the giveaway, including Estee Lauder, Chanel, Guerlain, Clarins, Christian Dior and L'Oreal. Not all products are available in all stores.
As WalletPop's Tracy Coenen reported in August, a class action suit was filed in 2003, accusing department stores and cosmetics companies of colluding to fix prices and selling them at the manufacturer's suggested retail price and never at a discount. It alleged that promotions were coordinated so that stores wouldn't compete with each other.

Perhaps my eyes deceive me, but I don't think Target is actually on the list at the cosmeticssettlement website.
Thanks for the heads-up though.

Read the settlement carefully -- The way I read it, Target is not one of the stores giving away the free makeup today, although they are listed as a Retailer Defendant. One of the last paragraphs in the settlement says that only the stores listed at the top are participating in the free makeup giveaway. Target is not one of those stores listed at the top.

I went to Target today and they told me they know nothing about any settlement and are not giving anything away. Typical for Target. Trying to return anything in that store if you don't have your receipt is like going to trial for murder.

You all know there are scam artists out there that want everything for free so of course they are going to sign up,"yes I bought this and this and even some of that " just to get the free makeup.Come on and who is paying for all that?????

I figured, I bought so much of these products, I was entitled to one free product from each! And I did go through more than one line. I even went to two different stores. The cosmetic giants are responsible for guaging the public. If other stores were closer I would have hit them as well..I spend thousands on these lines. Target used to be owned by bergdorf-goodman but sold out years ago.

? - I've purchased Clinque for years until about a year and a half ago. Is this in the free cosmetics from Macy's where I purchased products? Thanks much.

In response to Cheryl:
The consumer who already paid for these products during the time allotment has already paid for the distribution of these products...I got some free perfume from Macy's today because I have indeed bought makeup and lotion and perfume from some cosmetic counter in that nine year time span...so I have certainly already paid for and deserve my "sample size".

this free make up thing cracks me up it makes no sense to do this. Usually when there is these lawsuits you dont get anything out of the deal so all judges should make these kinds of court decisions.

Dillard's is owned by the Dillard family. It is not nor ever has been a part of any other department store chain. Just look up Dillards.com or go onto their stock page (DDS) and look it up.

It's a bit deceiving. It had to do with a particular "sale" with "discounts" that customers never received. I went to Macy's this morning and got a bottle of Ralph Lauren "Romance" body wash. When I looked on the box, it said, "Gift, not for sale". So, to me they aren't giving anything away that they wouldn't have given away to begin with. A joke, but at least I'll smell good.
