This undated photo provided by HSM shows the Mosaic Earrings from the Forever Your Girl line by Paula Abdul. They might not go home with a recording contract, but Paula Abdul doesn't let any "American Idol" contestant leave empty-handed. Each season she designs and distributes jewelry for the aspiring singers as a keepsake of their experience. Beginning this month, Abdul's fans will be able to buy similar mementos from HSN. Despite concerns over some un-dispersed funds, Idol Gives Back only uses 7% of the donations for overhead. In comparison many national charities spend above 10% on administrative and fundraising expenses according to CharityNavigator.com.
Even though the leaked memo makes no mention of the reason for canceling Idol Gives Back 2009, I can't help but wonder if there are concerns about securing corporate sponsorships which made up a bulk of the donations. One of the major sponsors in 2008 was Ford and given the recent scrutiny that bailed out companies are receiving, charitable giving, even when tied to advertising, may be reined in. If the government is going to be giving to charity, they might as well do it directly.
Hopefully donors will continue to support these programs by giving directly to the charities.

They did contribute to various charities in the US, it wasn't all sent over to Africa. Read the article...it mentions Boys and Girls Clubs, Feed America and the Children's Health Fund.
The one last year was just horrible...I taped it and ended up FF thru most of it. That may have been why contributions were down last year.
I prefer to choose my own charities and donate to them, rather than donate to a fund that distributes the money it collects to a dozen different places as it sees fit.

What does it matter what country someone is from??? Suffering is suffering; human beings are human beings. I was fortunate enough to be born in a developed nation where I have opportunities, as do ALL Americans. In many other nations, people do NOT have free education, they do NOT have public assistance, they do NOT have many of the things we here in America take for granted. Not to mention the fact that those suffering in America suffer a heck of a lot less than those who suffer in disease-ridden, seriously impoverished nations. When we take care of anyone anywhere, we ARE taking care of our own. "Mankind" is our own. It is by luck that we have been born in a free, developed nation. We need to help those who were not so lucky.

The name of the game is "FOX" & "MONEY". You have to look a bit deeper into this situation. Had my dealings with them. "FOX" should have another name, but I can't type it in.

I agree with Kim's comment that is what I thought too a year and a half ago when they started Idol Gives Back. Didn't make much of a difference what they did. Its none of our business to take care of another country's problem. Let them do it themselves. Take care of ur own country first before you interfere in another country's personal business.

Aren't people in other countries still people? What sort of life do we live is we are the only one's able to live it? Besides, our country has all of the resources and much much much much much more to take care of the entire world's financial problems 100 times over. Let's discuss the real problem in America, to whom and what does all of the money go to!!!? The rich, exploiting, government-manipulating CEO's, lobbyists, congressman, and other political "figures".

How selfish we are to think that we shouldn't help others in need - even if they are in other countries! Go there and live. We should help ALL living people - no matter where they come from.

Thats good they are cancelling it. I never liked it and they raised less money the second time. It was a controversal idea. Not everyone believes in this, I didn't

$60 million is still a lot of money so trying to justify it's cancellation by saying they raised less makes no sense. I also don't see how people coming together to help others is considered controversial.

People tha have the money need to share the wealth.... all over the world. Idol gives back was a great program and it is sad to see it go. For those who said that we need to help ourselves before we help others.. You are one of the big problems this country has. Greed. Hope you can live well with that your whole lives.

SHare the wealth? Dude, move to communist Russia. If people choose to give charitably, that's fine. But saying people should have to share the money they earned is ridiculous. I don't want Bill Gates's money, or Oprah's or yours. I'll earn my own, thank you. If you feel so strongly then shun your worldly goods, join a monastery, and preach it, brother. But keep your hands outta my pockets. I'll give to the cause I see fit, not the ones you or Idol mandates.

I really don't think you thought this through. Ever swim across the pool. Not try swimming across the pool with six or seven hanging on to you. Can't do it can you. Our great Nation cannot continue to do if forever either. Those who think so are a real part of the problem. You will be one of the first to yell, WHY, whey you don't have what you need and can't buy what you want. What a thoughtless statement you did make.
