PT Cruiser for a buck? Of course there's a catch
Filed under: Bargains, Entrepreneurship, Shopping, Transportation
The adage my dad used to tell me that "If it looks too good to be true, it probably is" looks like it applies here: In the news today, a suburban Chicago car dealer is selling a PT Cruiser for $1, if you buy a $40,000 luxury SUV.
The Cruisers that Frank Mancari is selling are used 2008 models with about 10,000 miles on them that usually retail for $10,000. The Chrysler Pacifica has a list price of more than $39,000. It's a great way to get people in the door as car sales drop around the country, but a little difficult to swallow when you do the math, as Steve Rhodes of the Beachwood Reporter did.
You're already down some cash by agreeing to the sticker price of the SUV, instead of any negotiated price. As Rhodes points out, maybe you could get the Cruiser for $8,000 and the SUV for $32,000 without the deal. With the deal, the two cars would cost $40,001 together. Not much of a deal so far.
The deal was to have ended Monday after the five Pacificas were sold, but Mancari says he may extend it to other models.
Neither vehicle gets great gas mileage. The Pacifica gets about 15 mpg in the city while the PT Cruiser gets less than 20 miles per gallon in the city. With gas prices dropping, returning to the gas-hog days of the past with an SUV may look like a deal now. But wait until gas prices go up again, because you know they will.

Why would anyone want to overpay for the PT Cruiser -- even if you didn't have to buy the Pacifica?

I personally love the PT Cruiser...and have a red one that I got a ton of compliments on its retro style. Then again, I liked the AMC Pacer and crocs.
When I was pregnant all I could wear was crocs..They were very comfortable but, let's be real...not so much to look at.
My trainer recommended a pair of insoles to me that are very comfortable, fit in sneakers and flat shoes and cause you to burn more calories with every step. They are called smartsoles. http://www.smartsole.com They work on the same principle as the expensive and unattractive MBT trainers. I found a code that gives you 10% off on anything on the smartsole site which I think expires next week. It is HAPPY10 and gave me 10% off
Hey a deal is a deal. I am going to put on my smartsoles and get in my PT Cruiser and go for a mall walk!

Have you ever driven a PT Cruiser, no power and poor gas mileage. Usually, when you give up power , you get gas mileage. My PT wityh five speed and hyper miling will get no better than 22 MPG! My BMW with a five speed and much more power and performance gets 25mph with the air on! It is easy to see why terh Big Three cannot sell cars. They have to improve their product now if they are to survive.

Bob,
First, comparing a BMW to a PT is silly. Not even the same class. And I have news for you, the PT has a MUCH HIGHER reliability rating than the BMW. If not for BMW's warranty, most would dump them.
Second, the PT has 3 engine choices. Clearly you took the wimpy engine with 5 speed. If BMW made a car that sold for $14,000, do you think it would be high performance?
I cannt believe how unfair people are to American Cars. Fact, there are MANY American cars that have a MUCH LOWER problems per 100 cars number than BMW.
In the last 10 to 15 years, American Quality has gone way up. Did you Know Lexus and Buick have similar quality rankings?
If Amercans want to turn this ecconomy around, Shop and buy AMERICAN!

I have owned 2 PT Cruisers, both turbos. Lived in Washington where there are numerous Cruisers club. The members luv their cars. They drive to car shows in several states, going over mountain ranges with no problems. So they would argue the power point with you as well as I will. We took a 7000 miles trip in our GT PT cruiser, going over the Cascades. We drove through Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, S, Dakota, California, Nevada, Oregon all with mountain ranges. Believe me, my spouse and my son led the way, in other words they pasted every car on the road. My PT convertible will get up and go with the best of them. So not sure what you drove but wasn't a turbo PT.

Actually, I like my PT Cruiser as well and did lots of research before buying it. We need a vehicle that could hall both children and stuff and that actually go better gas mileage than a truck. The Cruiser was it. We have hauled lots in it. A 2x4x8 can fit in the car with the split seat and front seat folder down. I was also able to fit a new stove and new vanity in the car with seats removed. Saved tons on delivery charges and truck rental. Also, my five speed does in fact get 24-25 miles to the gallon, as I have calculated... and the bonus... I paid about 8K... bet you can't say all of that about your BMW. The Cruiser is the first American made car that I have ever bought and although I agree it could be better, and hopefully new models will be... I new what I was getting and am very very pleased.

You seem to lump the CEO's with the people that work on the line and make the cars we drive. Trust me...NO ONE ON THE LINE THINKS ITS OKAY FOR THE TOP EXECUTIVES TO MAKE THE MONEY THEY DO OR GET THE PERKS THEY GET!!!! Also the men who work for the unions ( that everyone seems to hate) do not make the money that the GM executives do. You can blame the unions all you want for the price of a car, but without the unions working for some the rest of you would also suffer. Don't think your company would have just given you paid sick days unless there was someone out in the business world making it so they had to, or funeral leaves or alot of other things you people without unions seem to think you company gives out of the kindness of their hearts! Also I know of no one that works the line and makes $75-$89 an hour.
Including health benefits. $100,000 a years...please not in my family and my husband never turns down overtime!
The workers in the plants do not appoint the CEO's of these companies and would not keep them if they had a choice. No where but in America can companies be run into the ground by the people paid to make them profitable and then give these people bonuses....I guess for being such screw-ups! The shareholders of these companies need to taske a long hard look at what is going on and demand changes.

Don't most line folks make more than 50K a year? How do you justify paying someone who puts lug nuts on a car 50K a year? Some jobs may justify the salary, but that one doesn't. The unions have completely overpriced American goods. I agree unions had a place at one time, but that time is gone. The only thing a union will do for you now is cost you your job. Why? Because to justify themselves, every year the union has to get you more - more pay, more benefits, more time off. If prices are not rising, where does this "more" come from? It drives the company bankrupt, which is what is about to happen to the big 3. What is the union going to do for you when there are no jobs, because the companies no longer exist? But I'm sure you'll blame someone else...

You will pay the same price and sometimes more for a Toyota or Honda than for an American made car of comparable quality, and the foreign manufacturers have a cheaper workforce, so how do you explain that?? Stop blaming the unions. The benefits you get today from a non-union job are there because union members fought for it, and I'm sure if any of you union bashers was offered a good union job you wouldn't say no, so stop being jealous and support the unions because the job you save one day may be your own.

Hey, I give the dealership credit for at least trying something. He is a business person and in order to stay in business he is TRYING something different to at least get customers into his showrooms. I remember when people were giving cars away with the purchase of their home !! Get a potential customer in the showroom..even if they don't like the Pacifica/PT deal maybe they will like a 300 !! Thanks for trying ...

I love people that talk out of their rear since they are merely sheep in the world. Yes there are problems with the big3, but these have been LONG TIME coming. Not just within a year. Not even within 10 years. This is something that has come about based on YOU THE WORKER that feels $30/hr to sweep floors is something you are entitled to. But I digress... read this link. 6 myths about the Big3

It actually has some pretty interesting information considering all the doom and gloom the media portrays. It again is amazing how many people just ignore simple facts. I wonder why foreign automakers aren't in the same position, oh yeah, NON UNION. And on top of that, when your school administration is talking budget cuts, could some of the problem possibly be that those foreign automakers do not have to pay property taxes and have other tax breaks to have that factory here in the US? I feel bad for those kids and teachers.

You are incorrect, Toyota and Honda are both union. Frankly if we still had strong unions our country would not be in the mess it is in. The large percentage of the population work for an hourly wage, they buy most of the products. It is stupid to believe you can cut their wages to nothing, and or take the jobs overseas to increase profit then turn around and charge the highest prices in the world for everything from drugs to cars and expect people to be able to continue buying. Try reality, our former ways were and are unsustainable.

Luv those CEO's when things were going good where did all that money go? Now that people can't buy new car's because a lot of them are being laid off they want us the tax payer's to foot their bill. How about the little guy in business that needs help? Where does he go? Not to the congress he goes under. Come on let's get real.
