AIG Party Watch: This time a resort in Phoenix
Filed under: Ripoffs and Scams, Tax
AIG executives may not be making better business decisions while they're asking the federal government for more money, but at least they're getting sneakier! An ABC News investigation has revealed that a conference last week at the Pointe Hilton Squaw Peak Resort in Phoenix was another chance for AIG executives to frolic (on the taxpayers' dime). The conference was called the Asset Management Conference, and hotel personnel were ordered to not mention AIG either verbally or on signage. An AIG spokesperson told ABC News that there was no AIG signage because they wanted to lower the company's profile. As consumers, I think we're a little too smart to believe that. Something tells me that the company executives knew they'd get heat for another luxury trip.
There were 150 independent financial planners present at the conference, in addition to several top AIG executives. Yet hidden cameras caught top executives not attending sessions, and also captured images of limousines, fancy cocktail parties, and expensive dinners out.

About how many years did the Depression last in the U.S.?
- 5 years
- 10 years
Probably the biggest financial faux pas was booking former NFL quarterback Terry Bradshaw to speak at the event, at a fee of $40,000. AIG says that a sponsor was paying the fee, but they canceled his appearance. In total, AIG has said that the conference was to cost $343,000, with $320,000 of that covered by sponsor fees.
I understand the sponsorship dollars, and the attendance of the independent agents (who aren't on AIG's payroll, but are independents who only get paid when they sell something), and the continuing education aspect (many professions required continuing education). I just can't help but feel that these events at expensive resorts are in poor taste... Especially as the federal money demanded by AIG has almost doubled since the original $85 billion plan was announced. The tab for AIG bailout dollars is now up to $150 billion.

I WAS ONE DAY LATE AND THEY CANCELED ME.NOW THAT THE GOVERNMENT HAS PAID FOR ALL THEIR VACATIONS,THEY ARE DEMANDING PAYMENT FOR COVERAGE I DIDNT RECIEVE. That's bull, I totally agree with you Terry, I'm all for people working hard and enjoying a luxurious lifestyle, but not when it doesn't come as a direct result of successfull decisions. I've been an entrepreneur for 8 years now and I know that in the past when i failed there was no payout as a matter of fact there wasn't even a paycheck. We really HAVE to go back to a productivity based payscale and stop paying people simply for the air they breath.
Just my thoughts,
Adrien

Where is the big difference between tax payers giving money to rebuild Iraq when the have a SURPLUS,or fining haliburton for over charging the government on contract work they did. It has to be good business when I can over charge you 600 million and be fined 100k for doing it ???????? Do the math. something wrong with that picture

Wait a minute..I have a thought, maybe I not a college grad. or have a fancy degree, but how about giving 1 million to person in the USA, so they can spend the money to make the economy start up again, and not give to the people at the top doing the same thing(Bad Moves/AIG), in turn even though they have more money, WE the people still don't have any! I don't know maybe I wrong! do I need to find a village somewhere?

I am an insurance agent in Texas. We are authorized agents of AIG. FYI, by law, they can not cancel you for being one day late. They give you 10 days to pay. If not paid in 10 days, then they cancel you. On the other hand, you are correct about them raising the rates. I had one customer's premium double.

send your blogs to your congressmen.
They are the ones who can deny this money and make an example of them. How else will they be held somewhat accountable.

I agree!! We American must be sooooo stupid..what a bunch of suckers we are. I am so sick of being taken advantage. We are in this financial crisis because of the greed of others, and now I hear other companies are also following with their Bailout money, I read that Countrywide has also been seen have a get-away for there executives. When I read that the Executives have walked away with MILLIONS in their pocket will the economy goes down the drain, it makes me more angry. And I read that stock brokers on wall street will STILL be getting bonus's, discounted 40% OF COURSE, so the average stock broker on wall street will only be getting $200,000.00 this year...POOR GUYS!! I think Americans are at their end of being patient with the government, and with the way they have allowed this country to be run to the ground!!

I guess these insurance companies think we are stupid. I am a business owner and when I make a Non profitable decision we have to live with it, and not expect someone else to take the fall for our bad decisions the government cannot afford to pay for investors life style. And if they believe these outings are free its figuired in the product they sell we need stiffer regulations on what Bailout means.

Terry, that whole bail out thing is a crock of BS. Im sorry you got shafted and they get rewarded. All that is is corporate welfare, It rewards for ignorance and poor management on the corporate level. It rewards for not working in the private sector for the most part. This began along time ago when our society became complacent and stopped voting. If our polling places were as jam packed on every election day like they were on Nov 4 our elected officials would have no doubt that we were watching them and paying attention. But because our people do nothing but complain and havent voted, our politicians do what they want. Afterall by our voters not participating in the voting process the politicians are not held accountable. Everybody wants to gripe about the Pres and the rest of the gang in DC, but most people are too lazy to spend a few minutes online educating themselves as to how their elected officials are voting on issues. We can take our country back from big government but it going to take all of us to do it. "We The People" is a phrase the DC, State, and Local elected folks have forgotten about!
Good luck friend, all of us are in this together.

Terry, I am so sorry you are going thru this experience. But this is a good thing. You can now move on to an insurance company that will appreciate you and your hard earned money. It is apparent that AIG has so much money now, thanks to our leaders, that they do not need the middle class to pay their bills in order to survive. Bush had to give AIG the bailout money in order for his friends to get paid for the inverse exchange traded funds and the credit default swaps. Thats what the bailout money is really for! And when you find a good caring insurance company don't forget to past it on to the rest of us! Good luck kid.

Here's my idea - everyone posting here take out a $1m life insurance policy on the AIG's CEO and see how what happens.

ENOUGH already! Just how STUPID are those in charge at the asylum known as AIG? Worse yet, how stupid do they think the public is? It was bad enough when they launched their first 'get away' and now another one that they tried {in vain} to hide. What an insult to the execs and employees at Lehman Brothers who were NOT offered any assistance and the stockholders who went down with that ship. AIG gets help TWICE and BOTH times they celebrate at our expense. WHY are we giving them MORE money? Do they have another 'conference' at a spa booked already? The average taxpayer {you know ~ the ones paying the bills!} sits at home at night wondering how to make it to NEXT payday and hoping that there will actually BE one. These idiots have the incredible gall to PARTY while the rest of the world spins out of control. And, we give them MORE money to make it all possible. Now who is crazy? Since they so obviously are not going to reap the rewards of their selfish extravagance in THIS life, let us all hope there is a very special place reserved just for them, in the next one ~ and that it's a lot hotter than Phoenix!

Dodie,
I must correct you on one important point. The Asylum you refer to as AIG is actually spelled USA, and the question is...what kind of idiots are in charge of the bailout money.

my sentiments exactly....Rignt on!! And I have a feeling that once they found out they were going to get $85 billion dollars the head people got together and said "well if they'll give us 85billion dollars let's see how much more we can milk 'em for". So then they booked "conferences" and "continuing education seminars" or whatever you wanna call them. And now this country has to pay for it. If I was Obama I would reconsider giving tthat company any money at all. And to think I almost took a job with AIG several years ago. I am SOOOOOOOOOOO glad I turned them down!!!

Who are the real idiots??????? I watched the interview with one of the CEO from AIG he didn't sound apologetic, but justified the expenditures. There is no penalty for misuse of these monies so therefore they don't care
