Dunkin Donuts better than Starbucks: You knew that already
Filed under: Extracurriculars, Food
I write about 'The Latte Effect' often; the concept that, by eliminating Starbucks lattes from your budget, you can save thousands a year. Depending on the application of this concept (are you substituting with another chain's coffee, brewing your own, or giving up caffeine altogether?), it's either a fantastic way to save money or simply an illumination of how spendthrift our economy has become.Every time, though, that I write about giving up Starbucks, one of you (or a bunch) pipe up to suggest we drink Dunkin' Donuts coffee instead. It's better! you say, and not to mention, cheaper.
You're right. Surprised? I knew you weren't. In an independent, double-blind taste test, Dunkin' Donuts coffee was deemed better than Starbucks. 476 adults in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, and Seattle participated in the study, pitting Dunkin' Donuts Original Blend against Starbucks House Blend. According to the study administrator, the results "clearly indicate a preference for Dunkin' Donuts" Original Blend.
So the lower-cost choice is not just more imbued with working-class cred; it's tastier, as well. When your friends complain about how much their Starbucks habit is costing them, you can feel superior, in both good taste and wealth. Don't tell 'em, though. It's not kind to show someone how much smarter you are than they are ...

Both are swill as far as I'm concerned.
What's the point of spending the extra money for "takeout" when I can brew a good cup at home?

I agree. Keep in mind many americans are used to, and satisfied with, relatively bland flavors and general mediocrity when it comes to food. Most of the people who I've met that prefer Dunkin Donuts say Starbucks is too strong for them. Quite simply, they have whimpy taste buds.

Re: Jeff thinking people have wimpy taste buds. You couldn't be further from the truth! Starbucks over-roasts as routine. There is a difference between a strong cup of coffee and burning every variety of bean to the point where its qualities are no longer recognizable.
I've had coffee in Europe and I've had coffee at Starbucks and another national chain, never tried Dunkin, but I don't live in a Dunkin region. You don't have to burn a dark roast to have it taste like a bold coffee. Starbucks coffees have no subtlety or nuance whatsoever. It's not where people who truly like coffee go to experience good coffee. Starbucks is where people go to get the blended drinks. When you're adding sugar syrup and creams and what-have-ya, you don't have to taste the coffee so much. And Starbuck's sales reflect this - they sell more blended drinks than they do of their brewed coffee. Period.

Starbucks coffee is like rocket fuel. It is a good way to keep you going. Every now and then I splurge for a Misto Red Eye. Makes you sweat and revs you up at the same time. What people don't understand is that Starbucks has a standard when it makes its coffee. No matter where you go, that cup will taste the same.
Though DD's coffee is cheaper, they don't have a standard way of making it. Some places the coffee is spectacular. In others, DD's coffee is virtually undrinkable. I know. I have NEVER thrown out a cup of Starbucks, even when cold. I HAVE thrown out DD's on occasion.

Now aren't YOU the typical snob! Coffee, like anything else, is subject, any one person's particular taste. By that I mean, there is no right or wrong answer except for which coffee is more reasonably priced. But as you suggested that anyone that prefers DD need psychological help is just plain wrong. Yes, you probably said it tongue in cheek but this Dunkin' Donut coffee drinker doesn't appreciate the rudeness behind your statement.

Well, maybe you should have re-phrased. I got that you prefer DD coffee, others think you were slamming it. Me, I'm a serious coffee adict, I will occationally get a SB latte, have tried a DD iced coffee (poured it out) and prefer my Wal-Mart brand french roast I make at home. And I've tried other french roasts that are more expensive, and didn't like them as well.

Lynn,
Really I think it is two different kinds of tastes. I also think that at least in Brooklyn,NY where I live and work there is not much of a difference in price. What I am shocked about is how much my local 7-11 is now charging.
