AIG spa trip redux: Canceled!
Filed under: Insurance, Ripoffs and Scams, Wealth, Fraud, Recession
As if one trip to a luxury spa resort wasn't enough for American International Group (AIG) following its taxpayer-funded bailout, the company had plans to do it all over again. 50 AIG managers were scheduled to do a deluxe retreat at the Ritz-Carlton resort in Half Moon Bay. The company said it was going to host 150 top-producing agents for educational purposes.
The cost of this "educational opportunity?" Ritz Carlton rooms go for $300 to $1,200 a night, plus high costs for meals, drinks, and entertainment. If the earlier trip is any indication, this whole extravaganza could cost the company around $500,000.
Outrage from taxpayers has led management to cancel this outing, and lawmakers are relieved. Some defended the trips as standard fare for high-level producers for insurance companies. The independent agents win these trips by selling a lot of insurance products. Yet it seems excessive in light of the taxpayer assistance required by AIG.
With taxpayers on the hook for billions of dollars of loans made to AIG to help keep them in business, the company needs to find another way to give incentives to the sales force. Standard industry practice or not, these trips don't go over well during a time when belts are being tightened by the little guys. The cancellation of the trip is good news for now. Let's see what AIG comes up with next.

A continuation of bad management. Pull the plug and let the company go belly up before more resources are wasted.

First of all . . . There is nothing like living in America! We take a beating and we keep on taking more and more. I propose that we just go ahead and bring them to a spa here in Sunny Florida, I will put them to pick up bottles on the side of the road, get a tan at the same. . . how is that for a more economical treatment, that is the way we will start to budget now when we have the Illusion of a Spa. Son's of . . . The should all be put in prison and never let go.
We should also be more vigillant of the way our elected politicians Vote, to side with this companies and banks that charge us so much money for every sneeze, they are like blood Suckers, there should be a limit of the amounts of money they could make wiht all those fees. The other day I went to Bank of America and they wanted to charge me $ 5.00 because I had the odasity to Want to Cash my paycheck, because it is a Commercial Account. I said Go to Hell I will not pay you a nickel! Peope let's write and let our local politicians We are not going to take this Crap anymore, we are the majority and our Voice does Matter.

You're right Rubio, Hell's doors awaits them. Enough is enough!!!! I would like to have someone bail me out of my bills, and then give me a vacation. As an Elementary teacher, I don't see any vacation for me in the future. To think we're the lowest paid on the totem pole and somewhere in the world, these arrogant people have been taught by someone just like me and now they want me to help them pay their bills and see that they celebrate the help in style. God truly has something in store for them. They haven't seen the worst yet.

It is absolutely IMORAL the way CEO's and other top management is walking off with millions and millions of dollars. No, I DON'T THINK THEY HAVE EARNED IT ! ESPECIALY WHEN THEY RUN COMPANIES INTO THE GROUND, AND WALK OFF WITH MILLIONS AND MILLIONS.
It's way past time, somehow, there has to be a way to stop it.

AIG should definitely get their hand slapped for this. While I completely understand that the company purchased non-refundable airline tickets and the what-not, there are some ethical boundaries that are being crossed here. While the company may very well want to reward their "top-producers", those folks should be like the rest of us in America and be happy that they still have a job. With all of the companies here having to lay off workers, mine included, due to the bad economy, how can this company celebrate bad business decisions? I was lucky and got to keep my job; however I find it very hard to celebrate that while 600 co-workers are getting put out of a job. AIG should be showing some respect and humility in this situation and they should humbly thank the taxpayers for bailing their greedy and excessive butts out.

What top producers.Sounds like they have been loosing money for years. Dont they check up on any of the people who work for them to be sure they are producing! Sounds like a scam to me. They knew Waaay ahead of time they were in trouble and if not they are a bunch of idiots and shouldnt be given a penny for any bailout! As a taxpayer I protest the bailout. Bailout those loosing their homes and just about everything else they worked so hard for.....that would be the American way....

This is despicable! The bail out was a mistake. Will the gov. bail you out? Get involved: vote the pork barrel politicos out. Buy stock and vote the board members out. But first and foremost, start looking out for you and your family first. I discovered one of the best books you'll ever find about
finance, "How to Become Filthy Rich on Your Current Income" at www.how-to-become-rich.com. If people read books like this one we would not have the current situation we do.

I THINK THAT THE CEO AND ALL OF THE OTHER FATCATS SHOULD BE FIRED AND AIG SHOULD PAY THE TAXPAYERS BACK THE 440,OOO THAT THEY BLOWED ON PLEASURES. WE THE TAXPAYERS ARE SICK AND TIRED OF BEING SCREWED BY THESE FATCATS AND CONGRESS AND WE ARE NOT GOING TO SIT BACK ANYMORE BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO FIGHT BACK BY GETTING RID OF MOST OF THE OLD CONGRESS AND PUTTING SOME ONE NEW IN THERE AND IF THEY DON'T DO THEIR JOB THEN WE WILL GET RID OF THEIR BUTTS UNTIL WE DO GET IT RIGHT.

My suggestion to bail out America
I'm against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.
Instead, I'm in favor of giving $85,000,000,000 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.
To make the math simple, let's assume there are 200,000,000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18+.
Our population is about 301,000,000 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 and up..
So divide 200 million adults 18+ into $85 billon that equals $425,000.00.
My plan is to give $425,000 to every person 18+ as a We Deserve It Dividend.
Of course, it would NOT be tax free. So let's assume a tax rate of 30%.
Every individual 18+ has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes. That sends $25,500,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.
But it means that every adult 18+ has $297,500.00 in their pocket. A husband and wife has $595,000.00.
What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family? Pay off your mortgage – housing crisis solved.- Repay college loans – what a great boost to new grads Put away money for college – it'll be there Safe in a bank – create money to loan to entrepreneurs. Buy a new car – create jobs Invest in the market – capital drives growth Pay for your parent's medical insurance – health care improves-Child support will be deducted which will help child support enforcement agencies, as well as parents on both sides and the kids- pay off car loans or buy new car- older people could retire which will open up more jobs for the younger generation and help balance and bring down the unemployment rates. People can pay off all their credit card debts and save millions on the high interest rates. Also pay off all fines to states, counties which will help their budgets too. People will start their own business's, and last but not least, shopping which will make the dollar way stronger for this christmas season and create more jobs, and more production everywhere.
Remember this is for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of course, for those serving in our Armed Forces.
If we're going to re-distribute wealth let's really do it...instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 ( "vote buy" ) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President.
If we're going to do an $85 billion bailout, let's bail out every adult U S Citizen 18+!
As for AIG – liquidate it. Sell off its parts. Let American General go back to being American General. Sell off the real estate. Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.
Here's my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn't.
Sure it's a crazy idea that can "never work."=2 0
But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!
How do you spell Economic Boom?
I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 Billion We Deserve It Dividend more 20 than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington DC.
And remember, my plan only really costs $59.5 Billion because $25.5 Billion is returned instantly in taxes to Uncle Sam.
Pass this along to your congressman as it's either good for a laugh or a tear or a very sobering thought on how to best use $85 Billion!!

Once again, you people need to get your facts straight. You have the facts wrong with this story. INDEPENDENT INSURANCE AGENTS are not employees of the Insurance Company. And the insurance companies ARE NOT THE DIVISIONS OF AIG THAT WERE BAILED OUT!!!!
Before you continue to make incorrect statements, go to nys.gov, then go to the nys department of insurance, and read all the information.
You will see that your homeowners, auto, commerical, life, health or dental insurance policies have nothing to do with the bailout. YOU SHOULD NOT BE CANCELLING YOUR INSURANCE POLICIES WITH AIG, because they are not funded with taxpayer dollars.
It was the real estate and leasing divisions, THE BANKING DIVISIONS that were going under, the divisions that were overseen by the Federal Government!!!!!

Ok Ann, granted these things are planned ahead of time. This would mean that AIG planned this whole thing while going down the drain???? They were loosing an enormouse amount of money daily so how did they plan on paying for it?????If their producers were coming up with so many good policies, why are they in trouble now? This only goes to show you that a greedy company will stay greedy and not learn it's lesson. Now, why did they get two bailouts???
