The real reason cops love Dunkin' Donuts...
Filed under: Bargains, Food, Saving Money, Recession
I always had a soft spot in my heart for the humble donut. Long years after the cappuccino and croissant became the preferred breakfast of young urban professionals, I would always sneak into the little donut shop on the corner for my glazed twisty and cuppa cheap coffee. Then Starbucks came on the scene, and I never looked back. Now venerable donut chain Dunkin' Donuts is beckoning again. The chain is offering 99-cent cafe lattes in the afternoon hours, hoping to lure cash-strapped consumers who've shirked their $4 Starbucks afternoon fix.
The lattes, which normally sell for between $2.59 and $2.79 depending on the market, will sell for 99-cents at all stores between 2 and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. As Homer Simpson would say, "Woo-HOO!"
The promotion was launched in part to counter a similar promotion pushed by Starbucks, in which it charged customers only $2 for an iced coffee drink in the afternoon, with a receipt from earlier in the day. This in recognition that the expensive coffee drink is often the first little luxury to go in hard economic times.
Now that the words "Crisis" and "Depression" are in the air, the cheap coffee promotion is certainly an idea whose time has come. And snacks are sure to follow. Dunkin' Donuts is also offering an all-day 99-cent egg and cheese sandwich with the purchase of a medium or large hot coffee.
Both deals last through November 11. Something's gotta get us through the bailout vote and the elections.
The times, they are a changin'. I don't know about you, but I'm so there. I'm there this very afternoon, thank you. And I'll still be picking up that glazed twisty, too.

There is nothing like a strawberry frosted donut. Good any time of the day, with any beverage. =)

My Dunkin Donuts stopped doing the .99 cent thing 2 months ago. We went almost every day and now we haven't been since.

I had to respond to this one having heard the "donut jokes" for years.
The relationship of cops and donut shops goes back to the days before Kevlar body armor and auto loaders, and even radio dispatched patrol cars.
Back when cops were huge irishmen who carried "billy clubs" and .38 police special revolvers and of course the "gamewell key".
A gamewell key unlocked the call boxes which were direct lines to the station.
The police "call box" you see in the old movies were usually manufactured by the gamewell corporation of Salem Massachusetts.
All that was just to set the scene,
In those days there were no "convenience stores" and the only place open at four AM was the local donut shop where the beat cop was always welcome for conversation and a cup of coffee and of course and old fashioned plain "cake" donut, still warm from the deep fryer.
Coffee is the major reason you still see cops in donut shops late night but the fitness standards have changed so radically
that donuts themselves are usually off the menu for cops.
I'll get off my soapbox now but you've had your lesson in "cop history" and know the real reason the cops can be found at Dunkin Donuts

If Dunkin were to go back to how it was in the 70s, I would be right back on board. Gone are the delicious doughnuts that were actually made frsh right there out of actually dough and somebody making them. Not forzen doughnuts heated and/or brought from a larger facility. Coff from Dunkin was the absolute best, roasty and flavorful. Not it is like water and no flavor. Starbucks does rule, and even 7/Eleven has great coffee. If Dunkin would just turn back the clock and "Make The Doughnuts"(Like that old commercial used for the slogan "Time to Make The Doughnut!" ) I think the real coffee lovers would come back at any price! Starbucks has proved that!
