New form of credit card fraud is made for TV!
Filed under: Credit, Ripoffs and Scams, Fraud
It seems not a day goes by that I don't hear of some new method of identity theft or credit card fraud to guard against. And yesterday was no exception. I spotted an article about a group of Huntington bank customers whose debit card information had been used to buy several air conditioners at Overstock.com. Huntington was quick to deny fault in the matter, deferring the blame to, "some link on the Internet." Thankfully Overstock.com quickly reimbursed the fraudulent transactions and shed some light on how the theft may have occurred.
Alan Johnson, who heads up the fraud department at Overstock, told our local paper that the numbers were likely compromised by "card tumbling," a method of fraud that seems fit for an upcoming episode of Numb3rs. Since I can't call in Charlie Eppes to explain card tumbling, I'll do my best to break it down for you.
Much in the same way that a locksmith focuses on how a lock works in order to pick it, card tumblers focus on the rules and math that govern how credit card numbers are created in order to get to your money. Once they create a credit card number, they test it for validity and if successful it's used on sites that don't verify other information such as the name or security code on the credit card.
Perhaps what is most frightening about this method of theft is that you don't have to use your card online or have the number stolen to lose out. Even though the normal methods of safeguarding your credit and debit card numbers won't protect you from this method of hacking, there is one step you can take to keep your funds safe. To avoid the realization that someone in Nigeria has emptied your entire account, you can have your debit card attached to a secondary account in which you only keep money you are going to spend in the near future.

Apparently there is no way to stop these thieves. Even banks can't be trusted to protect your earnings. Maybe W3C can develop an initiative that will address or solve this issue for online purposes. And maybe the government needs to hear from the TAX-payers of this nation and be made to forcibly draft new legislation that will make our financial institutions develop a more protected system of debit/credit card usage policies. Policies that would not accept transactions unless they are confirmed by the cardholder. And maybe this can be attained via usage of a long-stringed code or fingerprint technology or something else -- that only the cardholder and its bank is aware of, but that is not retained in any publicly accessible database at the financial insitiution. Hey, I'm just speculating. If anyone thniks there is a possibility here THEN please get on it! I'm putting it out there, so take the ball and run with it!
Truly Frustrated TAX-payer of USA!

WHICH FINANCIAL INSTITUTION ARE U TALKING ABOUT, JUNIPER1? IS THIS SO CALLED FINANCIAL INSTITUTION WHICH IS NOW RETAINING YOUR DATABASE/INFORMATION YOUR BANK? AS I SEE IT THE BANK IS THE FINANCIAL INSTITUTION AND YOUR INFO OR DATABASE IS NOT PUBLIC THROUGH YOUR FINANCIAL INTITUTION (YOUR BANK) AS A MATTER OF FACT WHEN YOU DO USE THAT 3 DIGIT CODE ON THE BACK OF YOUR CARD IT IS ACTING SOMEWHAT LIKE A FINGERPRINT OR A LONG STRINGED IDENTIFICATON CODE. THE PURPOSE IS TO NOT LET ANYONE GET AHOLD OF IT. EVEN IF THEY DO, ITS ALMOST MEANT TO BE TRACKED. I'D LIKE TO SAY THAT IF UR BANK DIDN'T KEEP RECORDS OF YOUR TRANSACTIONS FROM ALL ACTIVITY ON SAID CARD THEN HOW THE HELL WOULD YOU KNOW IF YOU HAD ANY DISCREPENCIES IN THE FIRST PLACE

Juniper1, in the first place and this is to every one on here. NEVER, NEVER USE YOUR DEBIT CARD ON THE INTERNET. And it is just not the banks responsibility to take care of all of us it is our responsibility to keep watch on our credit cards and all of the business that we have. Good luck to all of us

I actually worked at a call center for the internet and had alot of people call in to cancel due to their identity being stolen and their cards being maxed out.
I watched while credit was being given away, and then the laws were changed about filing bankruptcy, so you can't bankrupt on your credit cards. That seems planned to me!! And now, our private information keeps getting into peoples hands and credit fraud runs amok. The scariest thing about it though, was that everyone I talked with said, even if they knew who stole their identity, by doing their own detective work, that the law won't do anything about it, and that if someone's social security number was being used by someone who stole it, they had to prove that they were the legal social security person for that number and apparently it isn't as simple as it might seem.
I am wondering, now that the banks have been bailed out, and criminals aren't being prosecuted for stealing our money..is there any recourse for the victimized people such as, maybe new laws, that will help them. All the money that these big banks and companies use, come from the little people..and the little people are a majority but seem to have no rights or protections anymore! What is going on in this world?

i agree, but it takes we little people,to wake up CONTACTING YOUR REPRESENATIVES . WRITE, CALL YOUR SENATOR AND GOVENERAND YOUR AREA REPRESENATIVE. AND THAT IS JUST THE BEGINNING. GET INVOLVED. IT HAPPENED TO ME IN THE EARLY 2980'S. IDENTY THEFT. I DID NOT SIT ON MY REAR. IT TOOK THREE YEARS BUT THE TIME AND EFFORT WAS WELL WORTH IT. AND IF WE ALL EDUCATE OURSELVES AND ASK OUR GOVERMENT TO WAKE UP IN WAYS THEY CAN HELP US AND THEY CAN. BUT WILL THEY? NO. NOT UNTIL WE START THE BALL ROLLING. IF YOU WANTG NEW LAWS, WRITE AND CALL TO DICUSS WHAT YOU EXPECT FROM THE PEOPLE YOU ELECTED..OR DID NOT. IT SEEMS THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK IT WILL NOT HAPPEN. I SURE HOPE NOT BUT THE CHANCES ARE GETTING WORSE EVERY SECOND. AND IT TEARS ;YOUR LIFE APART. PLEASE WAKE UP AND PLEASE EVEN IF JUST A POST CARD TO YOUR GOVONER, SENATOR OR WHO YOU CHOOSE BUT DO IT. AND PLEASE CONTACT YOUR BANK AND READ THE FINE PRINT. SEE HOW WELL YOU ARE PROTECTED. AND EVERY NIGHT WHY NOT CHECK OUT YOUR ACCOUNTS BE THEY SAVINGS , CHECKING, ETC. BY THE WAY IT WAS THE ABOVE PEOPLE I MENTIONED THAT HELPED ME . EVERY ONE WANTS PROTECTION. RESEARCH IT. ACT ON YOUR INSTINCTS AND DO NOT GIVE UP. GET INVOLVED. IT IS VERY SCARY. AND I OWN ONE CREDIT CARD, USED SO RARLY. I PAY CASH EVERY PURCHASE I MAKE EXCEPT FOR THE CREDIT CARD USED SO VERY VERY RARELY. I HATE HAVING TO HAVE IT BUT IT IS PART OF MY JOB.

i think america should do away with credit cards all together!
quit spending money you dont have, and that is why america is in the red. people abuse the credit cards so much, they dont even know what they are doing. and the credit card companys just keep giving you more credit. if you have bad credit, they just keep giving you a larger credit line, untill they take everything you own. the bottom line is, if you dont have the money to pay for it, DONT BUY IT!

John, thats a great attitude, but does nothing to solve the problem of us responsible types who shop only with Debit cards, not Credit cards. I have had my ID and debit card stolen and the theives in Indonesia emptied my checking account through my DEBIT card.

Great comment and I agree 100%. Back in the old days we worked and saved until we could afford what we wanted to buy and we wrote checks to pay for what we bought or used cash. The only credit needed may be for a home or possibly a car but not for a tv, IPOD, etc. etc.

I pay my credit cards in full and never carry my check book or large amounts of cash. Doing away with credit cards is absurd. Why should I have to suffer because some clown can't budget or prioritize appropriately. Get a life!

I have money to pay cash for the things I want but choose to use credit for a number of reasons. One is convenience. Another is perks. I see no reason not to take advantage of offers that allow me to wait to pay for something without incurring finance charge as long as I pay for the item before the time expires. For example, I bought a computer using a 36 month same as cash promo. I kept my money in the bank and when the 35th month arrived, sent a check paying off the balance. I never incurred any finance charge. I also paid for a vehicle using a credit card and went from 6.25% APR to 2.9% for the life of the balance. Thus, saving on interest. Also, as the balance went down so did the payment which put me in the position to be able to pay the lower amount if the need arose without compromising my credit. Not everyone abuses credit. Some of us know how to make it work for us. I buy things on credit, pay the balance in full each month and earn points which I then convert to free gifts and gift certificates. If you don't like credit, then don't use it. But I love plastic and will continue to use it. I pay my balances in full, have excellent credit and earn freebies all while keeping my cash for emergencies.

Perhaps if they pass laws mandating a minimum of 10 years in prison plus as a condition of release pay back all the banks, individuals and businesses they ripped off, then all the ID theft will start going down fast

I used to operate a BBS (the ORIGINAL WWW.. when everything went over the phone line.. games, files, membership Userids and passwords and if you knoew the SysOP you could get most anything you wanted.. programs, credit card generators, etc.. Have you noticed the new banking procedures? now the banks don't pay the smaller amounts first, they pay the larger amounts.. and if you are off by even a penny you are already in debt for over 30.00 EACH time a smaller amount gets paid because that is the banks new way of milking you dry.

I HAVEN'T HAD A CREDIT CARD SINCE 1994 WHEN MY EX MAXED ALL OF THEM OUT. I WAS STUPID ENOUGH TO HAVE HIS NAME PUT ON MY CARDS. IF I CAN'T PAY CASH FOR SOMETHING, I DON'T NEED IT. I CANCELLED MY DEBIT CARD. IF I NEED CASH I WRITE A CHECK LIKE WE DID BEFORE DEBIT CARDS. JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE MONEY FOR THE WEEK END IF YOU THINK YOU ARE GOING TO NEED IT. I DON'T PAY ANY BILLS ON LINE. HAVING MY I.D. STOLEN ONCE WAS ENOUGH FOR ME.

We paid off all our credit cards a little over 10 years ago. We go the cash route now. If we want something of the larger ticket item and we don't have the cash for it, then we save for it. There is no way we will ever go in debt again with credit card companies. We stick with cash. We use our bank card (check card) if something has to be paid for with a credit card but that is tied in with the checking account so if there is not enough money then well, we don't get it. We are raising 3 children with no credit cards, we own a nice home and own 3 new vehicles so people can't say you HAVE to have credit cards to survive. That is just a cop out. We live just as nice as anyone else does. When you use your debit card, use only with reputible companies and you should not have a proiblem. Knock on wood I have never had one.

We stopped using credit cards about 8 years ago. We cut up all of the cards we had and paid them off. We opened one account for emergencies (car repair, medical, etc.) that we could not pay cash or check for. This card was never used, however I recieved a call from the credit card company to question the charges. Someone had charged $5000.00 on my account!! Repudable company or not, people can steal your number. You are nieve the think that just because you trust the company they are not going to rip you off. The frued department told me that people just type in numbers until they find one that works and then they keep using it. The charges were made on line and the CCID # on the back of the card was not needed at the sights. Luckily the credit card company took care of all of the charges and closed our account. So you can be very careful and still get screwed.

WHEN MY FRIEND MARGE HAD SOMEONE BUY A CAR USING HER CREDIT, SHE HIRED A PRIVATE DETECTIVE TO FIND IT. WHEN HE GAVE HER THE ADDRESS, WE DROVE TWO STATES OVER AND FOUND THE CAR IN THE DRIVEWAY. THAT NIGHT SHE HAD A TOW TRUCK TOW THE CAR A MILE AWAY AND FOLLOWED ME BACK HOME. SHE LEFT A NOTE ON DOOR OF THE HOUSE SAYING: "YOU CAN CALL THE POLICE IF YOU WANT TO BUT IT WAS MY IDENTITY YOU STOLE SO IT WON'T BE ME GOING TO PRISON." SHE NEVER HEARD FROM THE POLICE AND SHE HAD AN ALMOST NEW CAR.

I agree.. we use our credit cards to get hotel points to use for free vacations and pay our balance IN FULL every month. If you can't be responsible, why should I pay for it?? I worked hard to get to where I am and now I have to bail everyone else out??? Plus get taxed to a point that it's not even worth making $$??
