Overrated: Rachael Ray is far from fantabulous!
Filed under: Extracurriculars, Food, Ripoffs and Scams
When it comes to Rachael Ray, I find myself seriously torn. On the one hand, I am convinced that convenience foods are a major step toward the downfall of Western civilization; consequently, I am willing to join forces with anyone who fights against them. By convincing people that they can easily and quickly cook meals for themselves and their families, Ray is doing battle against the junk food menace and placing herself on the side of the angels. To that extent, I have to give her a lot of credit. On the other hand, RR is also a traitor. In addition to her product endorsements for cookware, grocery stores, and knives, she has also made a lot of money shilling for Burger King and Dunkin' Donuts. Under the circumstances, I have to wonder if she suffers from multiple personality disorder, has an evil twin, or has been cloned by "the Man." Otherwise, I find it hard to imagine how the woman who won an Iron Chef cook off actually has the temerity to describe Dunkin' Donuts' coffee as "fantabulous." Unless "fantabulous" is a synonym for "tastes like it was brewed from a mix of flea dip and raw sewage," she's gotta be out of her tree. And let's not even get on the insanity of endorsing Burger King's deep-fried carbo bomb cuisine! Bottom line, anyone who is willing to sell her reputation to pander for the "Home of the Whopper" is morally bankrupt.
Don't miss the rest of our series on Overrated people, places and things!
Beyond that, there's the fact that Rachael Ray is incredibly annoying. I mean, like oh my gravy, she is super yum-o, mega-delish, über-obnoxious, gag-me-with-an-almond-biscotti annoying. Given a choice between spending a half-hour watching Rachel Ray and spending a half hour in my Algebra II class from high school...well, I guess I'd still watch her, but the fact that I had to think about it says a lot. I get that Ms. Ray may seem like a logical pop-culture step for a generation that grew up on Care Bears and My Little Pony, but she's just too damned precious for words. If her cuisine doesn't send you running for the insulin, her demeanor most certainly will. This brings us to the matter of her actual cooking. I don't doubt that somewhere, deep inside, she has a great deal of culinary talent. However, most of her recipes are for the sort of basic home cuisine that was popular in the early 1970's. There's nothing wrong with mildly updating old Joy of Cooking recipes with a little vinegar and paprika, but the sad truth is that the world has moved on. Given the incredible array of ingredients available in pretty much every neighborhood grocery store, it seems sad that Ms. Ray can't seem to offer more than a slightly jazzed-up version of the average bar menu. With culinary talents like Giada de Laurentiis and the Sterns offering quick, flavorful recipes, I have to wonder why Rachael Ray's fifteen minutes seem to be stretching into infinity!Bruce Watson is a freelance writer, blogger, and all-around cheapskate. When he learned that Rachel Ray has released a line of pet foods, a lot of things fell into place.

I really enjoy RR she is a bubbly breath of fresh air. Before RR came into the famous woman she is today. RR shopped with her Mom in a shop in Lake George on Friday evenings..a place where I worked at the time. RR was the same there as she is today.

I like Rachel, but she is nothing to brag about. I know a lot of working moms that can put a great meal on a table without that hulabaloo.
She deserves a lot of credit, but I wonder, if it would have been for powerful Oprah Winfrey, where should she be today?
She must have been very POLITICAL. I do not blame her if I could be doing the money she is making without knowing anything about real cooking.
Love cute Rachel, but does not find anything ESPECIAL.

So you despise Dunken Donuts coffee. You evidentally don't know what you are talking about because Millions of people rate thier coffee as one of the best. As for 1970's cooking.....Rachel puts a new spin on things and does it in 30 minutes. Bet you can't even meet her half way in a contest. Giada is a professional chef where as Rachel has never been to culinary school and lets people know that. She markets herself extremely well and her fortunes show that. Jealous just because your a freelance writer and blogger who will never come close to amassing the fortune she has?

I agree. RR has a wonderful and likeable personality. as for her endorsement in coffee, DD taste much better than starbucks. If anything, Starbucks coffee is overrated and too expensive. The cost of a small latte @ starbucks is about the same as a medium @ DD. She's a celebrity, so of course she would endorse products and companies, even dog food. Its a stretch and its weird, but at least she doesnt discriminate against humans and animals.

I have never been much of a chef, but have find myself actually following one of Rachel Ray's recipe and my boyfriend thought it was the best meal I had cook. So that inspired me to continue trying to cook more instead of eating out like I used to.
I personally like Burger King over any other burgers and I also like Dunkin Donuts coffee. So I guess Rachel R. and I have the same taste in food.
About her personality, I can agree that sometimes she can give me a toothache with so much sweetness. And where do those made up word come from? lol

I agree, she endorses way too many projects, has too many tv shows, and needs to just stick with what she's good at ...her cooking show. But I don't think I would criticize her cooking talent...her gimmick is making a meal in 30 minutes, and she does far better than I could do in half an hour. Do Giada's meals take a mere 30 minutes?

I have to agree with some of your comments about RR. The other day I was at Petsmart and saw her name and picture on some dog food if I remember right. I really kind of like her, but cooking shows, talk shows, endorsements...sometimes it's just a little annoying to see the same person over and over again throughout the day. I do have to take issue with you though about Dunkin Donuts coffee. When I was a coffee drinker I would go out of my way to stop by a Dunkin Donuts. Especailly when there were none available in the state that I lived in. Now you can buy it at the grocery store. I don't drink coffee like I used to but I would choose Dunkin Donuts over most other brands. Especially Starbucks....to me that is bad coffee.

I agree with your comments, RR is terribly annoying hawking all that stuff. I would like to see an interview with her in a relaxed stting, luxuriating on a velvet couch drinking glass after glass of red wine in a short skirt. maybe smoking a cigarette.

i cant deny that all this is true, but come on, in the world today, a dollar dont get you far anymore, just look at gas prices, they just started gettin under 4$ a gallon where im at and its still horrible, so in all actuality i kant blame her one bit for wanting to make more money. plus shes hot as hell and i cant deny that either. lol

RR really bugs me when I have to see or listen to her, but I have her 365 cookbook, and I love about half the recipes in there. I don't know what you've tried to cook of hers, but that book contains a lot of quick meals using some unusual ingredients. Also, you've obviously never tried to cook the recipes in "Joy of Cooking" - I'd like to see you try to get many 30 minute meals out of it! When you cook every night like I do, RR sometimes helps to get me out of a cooking rut, and I can substitute freely within her recipes.

My guess is the writer of this piece must have stock in Starbucks because DUNKIN DONUTS Coffee is about the best there is if on the go. Every taste test conducted has proven that DUNKIN DONUTS always surpasses the inferior over rated, over priced coffee at Starbucks.

not only can she not really cook, she is taking money out of restaurant servers pockets with her $40 a day show. tax and tip $2.19- are you serious? servers/bartenders make around $2 to $4 an hour, and are taxed on the ALL the checks rang under their name, not just the ones they get tipped on. so leaving a $.75 tip is not only rude, but unacceptable, epically when you are getting paid millions to make this stupid show. she (and trya banks) also goes on to show people how to make your own lemonade from water, extra lemons, and sweetener in the restaurant. not only does this cost the restaurant money, it raises the prices across the board on everything ordered in the restaurant, because they start to see a trend of food costs going up, and intake of money on the check stays the same. if the restaurant has to pay for it why shouldn't super rich rachael ray? do us all a favor and show us how the people who serve you food/drinks have to pay the taxes on your check, and how they can afford to pay their bills on the so called tip you leave! people do not go into a restaurant to work thinking they really just like to serve people food all day, they go to work like everyone else to make money and pay bills. if you only have $40 a day to spend on food on vacation do everyone in the restaurant business a favor and go to mc donalds, they get paid adequately to prepare, take your order, and serve you your food, they do not require tips to supplement their income. if the food costs to much where you are do not take it out on the server, just don't order so much, or opt for a less expensive item on the menu.and people servers/bartenders remember the good tippers, and remember the bad ones as well. things really do happen to your food(example dropping it in the drain and still serving it to you, spitting on it, etc............so don't ever for a minute take for granted that it is ok to treat your server/bartender badly, or leave them such a crap tip that they have to pay the taxes on your check, it is really hard work, and should be rewarded when done correctly.and rahael, servers all over the usa have seen your show, and none of them i have ever worked with, or employed like you, so check your food before you eat it. i do not condone this behavior, and any server in my place that would be caught will be let go on the spot. but people should be aware that it happens every day. i have been in this business for 25 years now and could go on and on about the nasty things i have seen.
and rachael never ever, ever come into my restaurant to try this crap, i own the place(and no it isn't a crappy little restaurant )and will be glad to show you the door, but only after i educate your dumb ass on how things really work outside tv land.go back to the hole form which you came for all our sake!

Why all the anger and rage? There are other jobs out there. Maybe the tips are bad because the service is bad. Blaming RR for this seems a bit childish. Love, Barrack

Calm down! You need to do your homework in regards to the show before you mindlessly cast such negative comments. If she bothers you that much stop watching the show...geez! Your endless commentary was as annoying as any I have ever read. I will take my own advice...the next time I see your name I will move on!

ya know maybe you should look into something before dogging someone in 2 paragraphs on y you wouldnt like them, $40 a day is made to be just that so she leaves 15% or so just to stay in budget she has said time and time again more is always left just because that is so so cheap being a former waitress or not. also you can see that the show isn't even running anymore bc that is such a tight budget thats why she has her other traveling show i didnt even finish reading your post because you are soooooooo negative about one of the only positive people out there right now. what makes you so much better then that???

Goodness Tammy, I hope you feel better after all that venting. A bit jealous? There is that "OFF" button that you and many others can do if they don't care for a show. That is what is so wonderful about this country we live in. Choices! We all have them!
Have a better day!

I ALWAYS leave 20-25% tip. (my daughter supported 3 kids & bought a house working as a single mom w/no child support). That being said, I use lemons & sweetner for my drink because I am diabetic and verrry few restaurants offer sugar-free, caffeine-free drinks.
