Wal-Mart moms and grandmas: Politicians are looking for you
Filed under: Shopping
"Soccer moms," "security moms," "hockey moms," and now "Wal-Mart moms (and grandmas)." Every election cycle, we get a new must-reach group of moms and this year is no different. But for the first time you are defined by where you shop.According to Time, Wal-Mart moms are worrying about paying for college for their kids and caring for their aging parents; they lack college degrees; they face problems of low wages, expensive and often unavailable health care, high energy costs and home foreclosures. Wal-Mart moms are typically Democrats, but with McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate and the Wal-Mart moms' racial "discomfort," the McCain/Palin ticket is looking better. After all, Sarah Palin is one of them -- she's in her 40s, she barely graduated from college, and she's about to become a grandma. She obviously loves Wal-Mart -- she happily presided over a wedding in the Wasilla Wal-Mart when she was mayor.
No longer are children's interests or your own passions a good way to define you; no, it's where you buy your t-shirts. And if you're one of the millions of moms and grandmas who shop at Wal-Mart, both campaigns are gunning for you. Expect to see as many campaigners as Wal-Mart greeters at your next shopping trip!

Where do you get off writing such a malignant piece of journalism? Ah, but you quote Time magazine as a credible source. I suppose that should give me some indication of your slant. "Racial discomfort" is not the reason people don't like Obama. Stating that Palin barely graduated is simply just false, and it appears as though you are grasping for something negative to state about her. Your haughty, sardonic tone disparages many average American consumers, who do shop at Walmart. I realize that you would not deign to be one of us, but don't disregard our wrath when you make feeble attempts to manipulate our vote through guilt.

I thought the comment was right on the mark and gelled with my experience the few times I entered a Walmart. Unfortunately, with the declining economy, we Macy's shoppers with college degrees and "good" jobs are now beginning to have the same worries, i.e. putting the kids through college, affording healthcare, etc. This country is in need of massive economic and healthcare reform, and you are not going to get that out of a Republican. Just ask them. Vote for them and you will find that soon you won't be able to afford Walmart either. It always amazes me that those with the most too lose vote for the party that cares the least about them.

Wal-mart is destroying the American way. They have monopolized on ALL areas of business - household items and groceries, They are reaching into pharmacies and banks as well. By their monopolozing on these markets, they are killing off small businesses in ALL areas outside the U.S. They use foreign laborers in order to secure cheap labor, cheap products, and WE buy them! They profit tremendously while the value of everything we, as Americans, once held dear decreases. They are evil to the American way and anyone who doesn't recognize this only perpetuates the problem. American families are being held hostage to poverty, unemployment, lack of ability to develop successful small businesses, inability to compete against cheap foreign labor and products, etc. They want YOU to vote Republican so that we continue to become slaves to their greedy intentions. How can NOONE see this? America's business controls government and they try to persuade us to permit their continuance to do so by giving us "cheaper costed" items! Don't be fooled by them - PLEASE!

Well said Suzy! It's a frightning day when a person is "defined" by where they shop, eat, what they drive, what type home they own ect. Typical Democrat? Are YOU a journalist? It seems you've an agenda of your own...???

As far as Palin goes - she's a joke. The woman clearly is not qualified to be VP, nor is she qualified to be a heart beat away from the Presidency. In her case, that heart beat isn't that far away. Palin may be the 40 year old Mom wanting it all and she's clever enough to pay political bull**** games, but she does NOT have the experience to run an entire country. She's got absolutely NO experience in foreign affairs and poor experience in economics. She's simply a FEMALE puppet being used by McCain to win votes for HIMSELF. He WANTS the Presidency for HIMSELF and he'll do ANYTHING to appease whatever group of votes he can to secure his selfish desires. He cares NOTHING for anyone but big business, lobbyists, and special interest groups. He'll destroy the poor and middle class Americans while laying in a bed stuffed with YOUR dollars. The man is pure evil and should he win, the U.S. will only go further down the path toward its own destruction. Palin needs to stop playing with our country and do what's best for it - leave it to someone who knows how to lead and has the intelligence necessary for the job. She certainly lacks it. How dare McCain play with our country for his own personal and corrupt desires!

Actually, it IS because of his color that many people are not voting for Obama. If he had been white and as capable and intelligent as he is, the polls would show him leading significantly.
Yes, Walmart is hardly perfect in how they have grown and destroyed small businesses BUT, because of this economy, many of us are reduced to shopping there to save some money. Where do you shop, Irish, and I am assuming you make a goodly amount of money? Tell us, what should we do?
I worry that John McCain has no idea how the middle classes and below are living. It is HARD!

I don't make an ungodly amount of money. I AM forced - not willingly, but FORCED to shop at Wal-mart because that is the only place I can afford. Is this not complete control? Thank the Republicans for this. We can't AFFORD anywhere else. How can we fight this? The ONLY way we could possibly make a dent in this is by voting Democratic. The Dems want to END the tax cuts for BIG business. With those tax cuts, big businesses will CONTINUE to control us - They make tons of money, hire outside the country, set up outside the country, kill all small businesses, ALL because of THOSE tax cuts. What part of this do people not understand? WE HAVE BEEN SOLD OUT. Our government is BOUGHT by Big Business and our government (the Republicans) CONTINUE to give them breaks. We have to stop the incentive for big businesses. Why do you think Wal-mart had those secret "manager's meetings" about unions? They DON'T WANT YOU TO VOTE DEMOCRATIC because their pockets wouldn't be filled as much. We need to bring back small business. We can't do that if we're to compete against the Wal-marts of the world. Incentives given by our government to these huge corporations is what is KILLING us! We have to stop them by voting Democratic to stop the tax cuts. If we don't gain some sense of control of paying off big corporations that only enslave us, we're doomed to failure. Obama may not be perfect, but at least he wants to END tax cuts for them and give small businesses a chance at success. He wants to give 95% of the population (the poorest of the nation) tax cuts. How can we climb up when we're repressed by big business? I can't tell you NOT to shop at Wal-mart because that's ALL we have left, but if we STOP THE TAX CUTS, at least we have a fighting chance to shop elsewhere.

This Wal-Mart Grandma hopes both parties me questions, because I shop at Wal-Mart to make our income go further every month, because the price of gas is sucking our income dry. We also have an elderly parent in our home, who is trying to make her Social Security check last through t he month. I certainly hope the canditates make sure this country has a health insurance plan for all Americans, which would include a plan for the future elder care. I hope the candidates really care about our country and make sure the jobs come back to this country, so we can strenghthen our tax base. I also think immagrants will help our country move forward with there hard work, and the taxes they pay will help our Social Security and help our country with the debt, even if some do have to get some food stamps for awhile. I don't care what color or sex the candidate is, I just hope that person will help Americans to help our country become properous and in turn we can help the world become a better place.

PLEASE TAKE MY ADVISE AS A DEMOCRAT AND WALMART SHAREHOLDER..VOTE FOR THE OBAMA/BIDEN TICKET.
SARAH PALIN IS NOT QUALIFIED TO RUN THE COUNTRY HERE IN THE USA OR THE REST OF THE WORLD WITH PROBLEMS IN IRAN AND RUSSIA AND IRAQ. SHE SHOULD BE A SCHOOL TEACHER. JUST BECAUSE SHE IS A WOMEN AND A HOCKEY MOM DOES NOT QUALIFY HER FOR A POSTION AS POSSIBLE PRESIDENT IF MCCAIN HAS TO STEP DOWN. OBAMA IS A LAWYER, A SENATOR, BIDEN HAS BEEN IN POLITICS FOR OVER 30 YEARS AND HE IS A DOLL.
I LOVE HIM. HE IS OUT SPOKEN AND HONEST AND IF OBAMA HAD TO STEP DOWN HE BIDEN COULD TAKE THE PLACE IF CALLED FOR AS PRESIDENT. COME ON LADIES LETS THINK LIKE A SMART PERSON NOT LIKE A WOMEN WHO IS SINGLE OR A WIFE. CAN U BECOME PRESIDENT LET ALONE VP. GIVE ME A BRAKE. THE REPUBLICANS HAVE KILLED OUR CHILDREN IN WAR AND THEY HAVE BROUGHT THE USA DOWN AS LOW AS WE CAN GET. REMEMBER HOW GREAT WE WERE WITH CLINTON. LETS DO IT AGAIN PLEASE. PALIN SCARES ME A BIG MOUTH, LIED ABOUT SELLING THE PLANE ON EBAY AND US THE GOVERNMENT MONEY TO SUPPORT HER WHEN SHE WAS AT HOME NOT WORKING.

I concur with Sarah all the way on this one.
Futhermore, I agree with Irish on WalMart. In my opinion, it represents the worst of America...don't forget that walmart is reknown for having its employees without affordable health insurance and thus having to turn to medicaid!

it is simply amazing to me, as Jeane said, that those with the most to lose vote for the party that cares the least.
