Back to school clothes shopping? Skip Wal-Mart
Filed under: Kids and Money, Shopping
I was strolling through the men's clothing department at Wal-Mart yesterday and realized something: it's not that cheap.Plain, ugly, Faded Glory jeans were $12.88 and oP polos are $13. Of course that's a lot cheaper than Macy's but it's also pretty poor quality clothing. A lot of families will head to Wal-Mart because it seems like it would be a cheap place to do back to school shopping but the reality is that you can do much, much better. Here are a few ideas:
- TJMaxx and Marshalls: if you limit your kids (and yourself) to the clearance rack, you should be able to find plenty of nice, name brand stuff for less than you'll pay for much lower quality stuff at Wal-Mart. Example: I recently found American Eagle jeans for $10 at TJMaxx. That's less than the Faded Glory ones are at Wal-Mart, even though American Eagle jeans retail in the $40 range.
- Plato's Closet: The absolute best place for teens. With brands like American Eagle and Abercrombie in gently used condition at 80% off mall prices, it's worth a bit of a drive. Bring friends!
- Steve & Barry's: Recently filed for bankruptcy but still operating all of its stores, this chain offers shoes, sweatshirts, jeans, t-shirts, etc all at $8.88! Great place to buy stuff with college logos.

I buy lovely clothing at consignment and thrift shops. I save a lot of $$, and every dollar I spend remains in my local economy. The (obviously) youth who posted above probably does not realize the money spent at Wal-Mart on cheaply made clothing will be mostly supplied to manufacturers in Asia who pay their (often child) laborers mere pennies a day in horrendous working conditions, with profits going to upper-level board managers and CEO's who will reap salaries in the millions annually, while the checkout staff and stockers will make minimum wage and not quite enough hours to even get health insurance! Instead, shopping at a thrift store allows for reuse of clothing- rather than wasting perfectly good items, keeps money in America at local businesses, and many thrift stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army use the money and donations to help in their local communities.
So spend your money wisely on better quality goods, keep your dollars in the US, participate in 'Greening,' and look great. Or be a snob because once something is worn even once, it's "used." So you'd better throw away everything you've ever worn once Ms Paris Hilton.

I have no problem shopping at thrift stores. You do have to be careful and look over each item but I have often found brand new cloths with the tags still in tact for less than half the rack price.

I believe that people today are too involved with what other people think. I raise my kids to be comfortable in their own skin and be who they are. What a person wears doesn't make them better or worse than anybody else. Maybe if everyone could be more comfortable with themselves there wouldn't be as many 'hate crimes', 'bullying', and 'peer pressure'. Come on people raise your kids to love the world and not throw things away or discards used items as trash, when there are people all over the world that have NOTHING!
Anybody who is in to 'reuse and recycle' should check out Freecycle.com and find a local group. People share things, give things, need things. It's wonderful!!! I was given a piano for my kids and gave a needy family some furniture.
Share, Reuse, Recycle!! Make our world better for our kids!!!

The idea of wearing another persons clothes seems so unsanitary. I'll admit that I am a mild "germaphobe", so it just seems to me you could never really get used clothes truly clean. Not to mention shoes, you cannot properly clean shoes and there are a lot of foot fungi out there highly contagious... Is buying used clothes such a good idea??

Why would I pay to wear somebody else's clothes? I prefer to buy used. My daughter was brought up with a clothing allowance to spend for new stuff but I paid for anything she bought when we went to a rummage sale, garage sale, or thrift shop. She grew up the way I'd hoped. She dresses better than anybody I know and at age 43 is still shopping "used". Some reasons:
the clothes hold no surprises. They've already been washed so they won't shrink, shrivel, or fade -- what you see is what you get. You can wash them when you get them home -- what do you think -- the spirit of the original owner is going to reach out and strangle you??
you can get many for the price of one
often, the owner has altered them so they fit you better. If you have short legs, especially, the chance to get pants that have already been altered can be very appealing
some things feel much better when they've been worn a while; jeans are naturally faded or worn, not artificially aged so they look old but still aren't comfortable yet
waste not, want not should be in the back of everybody's mind in today's world!
Wal-Mart is driving jobs away from America and they treat their own workers like sh...
rummage sales and some thrift stores are selling these things as fund raisers for worthy causes
you can have things that are different from what everybody else is wearing right now, if you want to. The variety of clothing is much greater than at a large store that buys hundreds of one style. You can find things that people bought in foreign countries or had hand tailored for them that nobody else is going to have
and yes, some rich people give their designer clothes away after they've worn them only once. If you know your designers you can get incredible buys.
