Stay in bed for mandatory paid sick days
The latest hub-bub in Ohio and around the country has been the push for all employers to offer paid sick days to all of their employees. The proposal, currently working its way through state legislation, is under fire because many see it as yet another area where the government is stepping into the business sector. This may be true, but this time I am behind the intrusion as long as the lawmakers can draft a law which provides some minimum of mandatory sick days to employees, while also allowing for many of the notable exceptions included in the new minimum wage law. Hopefully it will also provide some flexibility in there as well. All that, and it has my yes vote!
This is a good idea for one simple reason. The first thing you hear from teachers and school administrators is to keep your kids home when they are sick so that whatever they have isn't spread throughout the entire school. This same principle applies to small businesses, maybe even more so because a good deal of them do not have the capacity to carry on with five employees all out since Jayne didn't stay home with pink eye because rent was due next week.
Sure some individuals will abuse the new-found time off to deal with the sniffles or nurse a hangover, but paid sick days are already mandatory in Washington D.C., where businesses and organizations seem to be getting along fine despite this additional burden of paid sick time off.
In San Francisco, where there is a similar measure, the director of a local restaurant association reports that this abuse is, "not as widespread as people thought at the beginning." Personally if your employees are abusing sick days, I'd suggest that you look into the other facets of their work. An employee willing to abuse sick days won't likely have the drive for quality work whenever he is in the office. And the sooner you learn about this behavior, the more quickly you can start saving money by finding a more committed employee.
Another reason to keep sick people at home is due to their lower productivity. This is purely anecdotal evidence, but on days when my coworkers or I come to work sick there is a noticeable drag on productivity. Much like the flu our co-worker gave you, productivity drain itself is contagious. Other employees will waste time checking in on the co-worker, constantly using hand sanitizer and complaining to each other about how they can't take sick time off. Before you know it, an entire day has been wasted.
Another reason I am behind this measure? It's personal. While I have a good deal of sick days and don't use many of them, the job my wife just left provided no sick leave at all. Despite working there for more than two years, there was no possibility of taking a paid sick day off. On the one occasion in which she was truly "stay in bed" sick, the office manager gave her an earful about taking the day off. It may surprise you that this took place in a doctor's office, where she was constantly exposed to the sick, the very young and the elderly, many of whom have weak immune systems.
If mandatory paid sick days are put into law with reasonable limitations, I think we can all win. I think there should definitely be some requirements on informing your employer that you will be off due to a sickness as well as a delay between when you start and when you get sick time off. I think that at the least employers should not need to provide paid sick time until after the person has been employed for 90 days, and at the most a year. These time constraints should provide employers with enough time to find out if the employee is worth keeping on and thus providing them with sick days.
Unfortunately, right now is a bad time to put this onto businesses who are already facing higher expenses due to the current economic situation but it wasn't a good time for them to have to give a minimum wage raise either, and there likely won't be a "good" time to require this.

I am working hard in Pennslvania for Mandory paid sick days. Lot of firms will not exuse the employee when out ill , Also if point systems are in place employee would recieve one point out for each day missed from work. Firms large number of them will not except doctor notes as excusable absents. I find this to be inhumain, for any working American. Also this takes away the power from physicans who are looking out for the welfare of their patients. However i feel there should be limatation on how many sick paid days should be allowed for the callander year. This should be in law !

Also wanted to mention In Philadelphia today at the Pennsylvania Convention Center The Pennsylvania House Labor Relations Commitee held close room hearing for Mandatory paid sick time. Also when any thinks of this law comming out of your pocket, think of the person in bed ill recieving points for unexusable absents that may lead to termination, What happens, that firm must replace that worker and retrain someone to take his or her place that is costing more money for employers than allowing mandatory sick time. Look what took place in Philadelphia today You can make it happen let your voices be heard iam just an average guy they listened.

Thank you Josh Smith, we are bonded on this important issue. I understand fully what happened in your wife’s case, if it were the company several of my friends work for they would have also been written up. Our fight will not be in vain, the mandatory paid sick time bill will pass. I received countless e-mails along with you the American people were not even aware that companies had the right to reject doctors orders also. Took for granted that all workers received paid sick time I strongly agree with you having limitations on the amount of sick days each calendar year and agree with all your other issues you have written on this topic. Josh thank you so much for helping all working Americans. Together along with all working Americans we must continue on until this bill is in law. Sincerely Card.

Several people are saying this is bad time due you economy crisis to being up issue on mandatory dick time. Is it also bad time for smoking band Cell phone without ear piece recently working on passage for many states during the economy crisis? Why then when mandatory paid sick time is brought up for the health and welfare for the American employees seems to be left on the back burner?

Just read this from Author Card from Comcast forum things are moving. Dear Workers of America, I was personally told from one of the most respected leaders in our country, who shares our same values his compassion for others and will fight Our fight for Mandatory paid sick time, Doctor Orders and notes for those companies who refuse to comply this will be going to the 110th Congress as top priority. We brought to the table our views without holding any punches and the impotence to have this passed for all working Americans who fall under this inhumane policy, there could have been many additions we could have included. Now with the leader who will be bringing our case to congress and representing us he would have more additions we could not even imagine, there will be opposition even with in congress; the one thing left for us to do is to further help this great leader by continuing E-mailing your congressman- governor – senator so he may have statistics of all Americans in favor expressing your views. We have the out most respect for this Great leader who I consider my dear friend without having the opportunity and honor of meeting him only through our e-mails. Now its time to thank the thousands of you who read my articles, showing your support with your e-mails, those head lights on I will continue to have mine own on, like I mentioned was not person like myself or any others like me who will win this battle, it belongs to you the American people who cares for the Health and Welfare for the American worker of every gender. We live in the Greatest Nation on this planet who allows freedom of speech gives the opportunity for all to be heard and listened to. Lets keep in prayer our fighting men and woman in uniform, our law enforcement as we paid honor for police officer Sgt Patrick McDonald who lost his life along with all others we lost protecting all law abiding citizens, we also must be part of helping to end the violence and stand by our police officers by showing our support and respect. For our next Commander and Chief who will be facing so many uphill challenges- decisions in the history of our country. America America how great you are and always will be stars and stripes forever. God Bless America.

Those who read my articles would like to take this time to thank. with-out my knowlage blog i was posting has be removed. This does not mean in any way our fight is over for every American Worker to have sick days- doctor orders being adhered to I am in contact with Health Welfare Reform on regular basis - Asking every-one to support them through your e-mails and calls- Asking everyone to e-mail your congressman governor- senator - urging all medical physicians to do the same . Never policies created from layman disregard your doctor orders- No company policy should threaten- give points= or termminate any one for being sick statistics prove this one out of six American Workers are enduring such punishment of every gender- With so many contagious viral bacteria infections with out sick time - doctors orders being forced to work may cause any one to loose their life in fear of loosing their job. Author Josh Smith understands this and he will keep posting for you the importence why this needs to be mandated into law- My work will continue in many different areas to have this as your fundamental right as Americans.
