Top 25 things vanishing from America: #8 -- Wild horses
Filed under: Extracurriculars
This series explores aspects of America that may soon be just a memory -- some to be missed, some gladly left behind. From the least impactful to the most, here are 25 bits of vanishing America.
Although free roaming horses, or as some people call them, wild Mustangs, are still fairly easy to find in America, the true "wild horse" may have long become a thing of the past. Today's free roaming horse herds are well-bred groups of animals managed by default. That is what they have been for quite some time. Free-ranging horse herds can still be found in California, Eastern Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. These herds exist in relative security under the watchful eye of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), with additional supervision from a handful of private organizations. They thrive so well in fact, that the BLM has had to liquidate them by auction on a regular basis.
Equine historians believe that the horse species originated in North America, and then they were then brought to extinction here between 8,000 to 13,000 years ago. This means that today's free roaming horses are most likely the descendants of domesticated transplants. It is hotly debated as to whether these horses are to be considered genetically indigenous or not. Thousands of horses from perhaps thousands of sources were released by either plan or chance into the wilds of America's vast frontiers. In virtually all instances of release, the horses were originally brought to their new locations for human purposes. Upon release, whether planned or accidental, they were indeed free range animals, however, they may never have been true native wild horses.
It is estimated that 100 years ago, as many as two million horses were roaming free within the United States. In 2001, National Geographic News estimated that the wild horse population had decreased to about 50,000 head. Currently, the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory board states that there are 32,000 free roaming horses in ten Western states, with half of them residing in Nevada. The Bureau of Land Management is seeking to reduce the total number of free range horses to 27,000, possibly by selective euthanasia, stating that the department estimates it will cost up to $77 million annually to effectively administrate free roaming horse management programs by 2012.

Please tell me why it would cost $77 million dollars per year to take care of 27,000.00 horses. Please. What is wrong with this picture. That's over 2 1/2 million per horse. Obviously the program is being mismanaged and the horses will the ones paying the price for it.

So, because taking care of them costs money, the government just wants to kill them?? We spend billions to take care of convicted rapists, murderers, child molesters and gangbangers. We have spent untold amounts of money fighting the Iraqis just so Bush could satisfy his need to outdo his daddy. But we can't save a few thousand wild horses? What have we become?

Denise,
Thank You for saying what my outraged and horrified mind just thought when I read this. How much more will they do to destroy our beloved creatures. This is murder plain and simple. Oh and we can't build enough prisons to house all of these corrupt people.
They represent everything that is in prison. The difference is they bend the law to stay out of jail.

Touche'. I think that is the stupidest thing I have heard in a long time! Really puts 'Freedom isn't free' in a whole new prospective now doesn't it. Wild horses are a beautiful thing and are part of our history so this to me is a very unwise decision on the governments part.

Your right, what has this country become. I can't believe I just read that... that is insane, killing horses... and we pay to keep criminals behind bars. How's about euthanasia for the rapists and murderers.
Now this is a dying art that has become extinct.
The death penalty for the guilty. Horses are innocent.
Who is running this country, is anyone running this country...?

Never thought of it that way. You make a good point. I would gladly take tax dollars away from taking care of inmates and put it towards the care of wild horses. Besides, how much is it going to cost to catch and euthanize these horses? If they are going to catch them, why not selectively geld stallions and spay mares as a way to cut down on cost and still save an American icon?

Someone asks how much it will cost to round up and euthanize the wild horses. What you all need to be aware of is that the BLM intends to shoot the horses after they round them up by flying helicopters and dropping nets on them. You can get more information on the Internet about this. Try checking out www.thecloudfoundation.org. The truth is that they want the horses off the land to make the big money cattle people happy. You can all help save the wild horses by getting involved by way of phone calls, e-mails and letters to any and all that will listen. The wild horses are vanishing and they are vanishing fast, most are not adopted to loving homes but sold at butcher houses and shipped overseas for people to eat. Make a difference and make a phone call today!

I think the horses have more sense than our government!!!
I agree with both previous comments. I could go on and on about how much money our government spends on wasteful, stupid things. They won't allow drilling for oil at home due to the affect it might have on our evironment, caribou, etc., even though I think we can do so in a safe, responsible way, but on the other hand, they want to kill wild horses - doesn't make sense to me.
I would hate to be the one who has to look into the eyes of a horse as he is getting a life-ending injection.

You and I are like twins. I agree with you 100%. Can a person look into the eyes of any animal, and make the decision to take their lives. If anyone had a Heart, they would think of a way to fix the problem. I would help any animal, before I would help a Human. God put these animals here for a reason, and this is their home also. Why all of a sudden this crap has to start??? The wolves, I Love the wolves. If I could I would have 1 or 2. The only thing close to having them is my photos of them. I have an all white one, I named her Sierra. So Beautiful. They are so smart, and you can love them, like all others. You know, I always come back to the Humans. Don't you think there are way too many of them?? Women constantly having Babies, and some have the babies, and don't want them. Now that irks my jaws. Why would you carry a baby for 9 months, and throw them away???? We need smart people to come together and solve this problem.I have a poster that say's.....A Horse is Meant to Run Free-----Stop the Murder......Something is gona come down, and not on the light side. The day is coming when the world is going down. I think it's getting close. I just can't wait. Lets keep the horses, think about it, what have they done to us????

Can't the U.S. Gov't do ANYTHING right? Why euthanize the horses? What's the reasoning? Apparently, there is none and yet it would coust millions to selectively euthanize them. Is this due to land speculation (greed)?

Our government needs a reality check. The powers that be need to get their priorities straight. If we can AFFORD to keep millions of ILLEGAL immigrants on welfare and medicare, paid for by us LEGAL US CITIZENS, we should be able to afford to care for a few thousand american born wild horses.

I believe these animals should be preserved much like the American Bison which once roamed freely. Their numbers have diminished so greatly, you are lucky to see them in the preserves. There are many people willing to adopt them and care for the "excess" numbers. That is one way of controlling numbers, not euthanasia.

This has to be one of the most idiotic things I have heard in a long time.It has to rate with some of the things George Bush says from time to time. These horses are one of the few natural resourses that we do not import. That has a lot to say about our humane society. Our horses are a national treasure and should be treated as such.
