Look again: Buy refurbs and save big
If you've done any online shopping for electronics or computers recently you've most certainly come across a refurb section with items at deeply discounted prices. Matthew Dillon at GottaBeMobile.com, rounded up a great collection of the different ways you can save money buying refurbished, and also compiled several great sources for finding refurbished electronics. Types of refurbished products:
- Refurbished - The unit was determined to be defective and given a complete overhaul to fix the problem.
- Scratch-and-Dent - These products will have slight variations on the exterior appearance, but they should function fine.
- Open Box - You'll find these in the corner of a brick and mortar store often missing remotes and manuals. These are usually returns or floor models, the latter taking heaps of abuse at the hands of customers.
Still not sure? Keep in mind that refurbished products have usually been looked at and tested more closely than the original units that ship. Just make sure that the return and warranty policy policies are favorable before you purchase. GottaBeMobile has many more tips on getting the best deal on refurbished products.
Do you buy refurbished? Have you had good luck?

The refurbished products are fine to take a chance on but the open box is not. I bought and open box microwave at Best buy and when I tried it made such a horrible noise I jumped in fear. I quickly took it back telling them of the horrible noise and cautioning them not to resell it but return to the factory for overhaul. They took it back and purchased a new one which lasted all of 1 1/2 years before the turntable stop turning, unusual for a microwave, they normally last 7 years. Its still cost me a lot of gas so I lost anyway.

I have not bought a refurb in years, but I used to buy them. I had great luck with each piece I purchased.
I bought two refurbished computers before I bought a new one. I also bought a refurbished CD player, I still use it.

I buy refurbished electronics from NuLime.com. I've bought a marine battery charger and handheld VHF and have been very pleased with the quality of the remanufactured hardware, which I consider to be less likely to fail early than a new-in-box unit.
