Think your grocery bill is high?

In the blistering summer heat, everyone enjoys watermelon. It was a staple during my childhood and it is one of the most fun fruits for kids to eat. Watermelon is huge, drips everywhere and you can have seed spitting contests. What's more fun for a kid than making a mess? However, if watermelon was expensive, I would have certainly grown up making a mess with other fruits.Recently a Densuke watermelon fetched $6,100 at an auction in Japan. This is one of the most expensive melons ever sold in Japan, and I would have to imagine the rest of the world as well. At 17 pounds the cost of the fruit was about $359 per pound. I think that's more than I would fetch at an auction. For comparison, it's equivalent to 122 pounds of Godiva Dark Chocolate Truffles. This price isn't even much of a shocker for Japan where a pair of cantaloupe melons sold for $23,500 last month.
In Japan, watermelon is seen as a luxury, and it is often given as a gift. Densuke watermelons are a unique type of watermelon grown only on the Japanese island of Hokkaido, an island known for its agriculture. They also have a black skin instead of the more common green color. So you can see how this melon might have a slightly inflated cost. However, I have no proof that they are the most delicious fruit in the world worthy of such a price.
Expensive fruit seems to be somewhat of a common thing in Japan. Including items like this $120 boxes of cherries. So if you're feeling down as food prices go up this year, don't get too upset. Things could be a whole lot worse.

I'm glad I read that it is for a special kind of watermelon before I booked myself 4 tickets to Japan.
1 for me and 3 for my melon headed dummies!
