Handgun and a car: The LA special, now available in Missouri!
Mark Muller, the owner of Max Motors in Butler, Missouri, blames Barack Obama: "He said all those people in the Midwest, you've got to have compassion for them because they're clinging to their guns and their Bibles. I found that quite offensive." Muller went on to admit, however, that "We all go to church on Sunday and we all carry guns."
The irony-impervious Muller decided to take Obama's words as a challenge, and began offering free handguns with every vehicle purchase. Sales have quadrupled in the three days since the promotion began, and the company has sold more than thirty vehicles. Most customers have taken the free gun, a Kel-Tec .380 pistol, although Muller is also offering a $125 gas card for those patrons who don't want to carry a firearm in the glove compartment.
The irony, of course, is that Muller is doing a fantastic job of proving Obama's point. While we wait for the irony to sink in, however, Muller will continue to sell his road-rage special until May 31, 2008. Get your gas-guzzler and lethal weapon while supplies last!

Leo-
Actually, I live in the Bronx. Frankly, I rarely feel nervous about my safety. Guns are illegal in the city of New York and, although many people still carry them, they are far less plentiful than they were in my last hometown, which was Blacksburg, VA.
And, yes, I was there on April 16. And, yes, I knew people who died. And, yes, I have problems with the endless promulgation of firearms.
My biggest problem with guns is that, in the storied yesteryear of the American Revolution, people knew how to use firearms and they used them together. Guns were, in many ways, a means of holding society together. Today, however, the NRA is encouraging people to purchase handguns as a means of defending their personal territory. The emphasis is on purchase and protection, not on training, and certainly not on community. This is why handguns have become a force for the further splintering of society, not for the development of community.

Mike-
The First Amendment has firm, crystal clear language ("Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."). The Second Amendment, on the other hand, is very wishy washy ("A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed"). Frankly, I've grown tired of hearing irresponsible gun supporters hide behind the Second Amendment.
Is there any law requiring that all the gun owners picking up weapons with their Ford trucks actually know about gun safety or have any idea about how to use their new firearms? How can anyone who really cares about safety and self-defense support blindly passing out weapons to untrained people?
If the NRA and the other gun supporters really care about the safety that they so loudly trumpet, then they should pursue laws that limit gun ownership to those who are properly trained. Anything less is irresponsible and short-sighted!

Bruce and Steve appear to be so fearful that they would attack the very document (the Constitution of the United States-specfically the 2nd Ammendment) which protects them. I invite them to travel to any ghetto in the United States (try Philly's North Side or even the area around Temple University; or St. Louis, Mo.'s inner city; to name but a few) to receive an experience in reality. Politicians like Obama, with their so called liberal legislation prohibiting firearms, effectively disarm law abiding Citizens, while protecting the criminals, who prey on the innocent and "soft targets" (e.g. schools with no armed guards). Criminals will never disarm simply because the law prohibits them from using a gun in a violent, criminal act. And, our Police Officers cannot be every where at one time; I commend anyone who is is willing to bear arms in order to protect him or herself, and his or her loved ones. By the way, the People are the Militia (not the National Guard) so Citizens, who keep and bear arms, are expected to assist in securing our Great Nation in times of crisis (see U.S. vs. England, U.S. Revolutionary War).

Politics aside, the choice here is pretty easy from a WalletPop point of view: The Kel-Tec is worth more than $125...

Very, very good point. Economically speaking, I'd have to go with the gun.

I driven in Watts and South Central as well as all parts of LA County over my 40 years on my job. Had to leave the car and do some walking as well as entering some homes to do research. No problem for a white male. I am not against gun ownership but the gun nuts ought to go to Iran and other parts of the world to fight terriosts if they are so fond of their guns.

In Missouri, any 21 year old state resident that is legally capable of owning a gun, is allowed to carry a loaded gun concealed in his/her car. Any spineless punk that refuses to take responsibility for their own self defense, is allowed to voice an opinion. 2nd and 1st amendments at their finest. It is hilarious to me that you utilize the one and despise the other.
