Men skipping hair transplants for spider vein surgery
Filed under: Health
It seems the times, they are a changin'. Traditionally one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries for men was a hair transplant. Not surprisingly, the cost of a hair transplant is pretty high, but when you factor in the 15-year cost of maintenance with the initial procedure, you end up spending an astronomical $30,000 on hair! With belts being tightened in households across the country, men are switching to lower a cost cosmetic surgery, one traditionally associated with women.According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), the treatment of hair transplants has declined for males while the treatment of varicose or spider veins in males has climbed. How much you ask? Sclerotherapy, the surgery for spider veins has risen 226.3% over the past five years for men, while only rising a moderate 3.5% for females. The procedure to repair varicose veins is a more affordable $200-300, compared to just the initial cost for a hair transplant. The AACS, attributes this to fewer stigmas associated with this cosmetic procedure for males.
I don't understand this huge demand for cosmetic surgery in men. Aren't we supposed to be able to grow old, get hair where it doesn't belong and lose the hair we had 10 years ago? When did we lose the ability to look like Walter Matthau and jack Lemon in Grumpy Old Men. Maybe I feel this way because I am only a quarter century old with a full head of hair, but honestly surgery to get rid of spider veins? Unless your getting your varicose veins fixed for health reasons, relax and enjoy the ability to be a weathered old man.

I'm a female, and it wouldn't bother me if my man lost his hair or had spider viens. I'd much rather be with a man that was comfortable with who he was, rather than someone wishing he were something else.

The author, with a full head of hair, and undoubtedly, no varicose, or spider veins, is not the right person to write this little article. If there is one thing that is more of a turn off than ugly veins, I don't know what it is. I look at a womans legs, and if I see them, I'm not interested. I assume that a woman would feel the same about a man. It's not a normal part of ageing, as not everyone gets them. It's genetic for some people. I say get rid of them, especially if you are single and looking.

In general Barb that i guess you don't get it.
You put on make up to make yourself look better, right, well i guess you want a man that wants you for who you aren't then because your tryin to improve on what god gave you. Thats all us that are having this done are doing and what is the harm as for the young punk 25 yr old that wrote this get some age on you before you comment on older issues... stick to the younger male problems of today. You obviously have heard you have to live it to write about it before or you don't know. well this is one of those cases.
In essence Stick to what you know!!! Not what your guessing about just to write a column NOOBIE!!

Jonathan, I think you need to relax a little. The author wasn't insensitive about the issue of aging, he was just giving an opinion & offering suggestions.
The worst part of the "cosmetic" thing for men that doesn't allow men to age gracefully now are the high end demands of women & what they seek in a man.
Middle aged women who I'm in the market for are now in large numbers seeking younger partners. They feel they've either gained that sense of freedom to play the reversal role of empowerment or they're financially well off enough to play as they wish.
I personally refuse to alter my looks or lifestyle based on what the opposite sex finds appealing for the reason I'd be contributing to a phony society which is only getting worse in my opinion.
I sorta like myself & if there's not a woman that finds me attractive for the same reasons in my natural state then I guess I'll fly solo. I do ok though, I suggest everyone take care of themselves & inevitably discover the secret of happiness in their own way....

You dope's! People get cosmetic surgery for themselves. It's an ego booster. It has nothing to do with the opposite sex. If they want it fine. If not, that's fine too... Who really cares? Th article is a waste of space....

In general, men age better than woman. They are like fine wine, some just get better with age as woman become just "old"...I say, if cosmetic surgery repairs something that you are unhappy with and makes you feel better about yourself, go for it. It's a personal choice!!!

How dare you say that MEN age better than women, how dare. Who brainwashed YOU?
Look around my area in America and the 50 year old men are
Sloppy, fat belly's, bald,LAZY, and very unappealing.
The Mall's of America are loaded with these characters.
forget about plastic surgery, guys
clean up your act, dress better, loose weight, and get of your FAT A...s and than you be appealing to some women.
MY wife would not let me get away looking like this
and I love her for it.

I KNOW MORE THAN THIS KID WRITING, BECAUSE
I am a man...I had this done. At 48 years old, I go to the gym and keep in shape. There is nothing 'romantic' or interesting about looking like a weatherd old man at 48. Jack and Walter were in there 70's (or 80'?) when they made Grumpy Old Men. Spider Veins will be the least of my concerns then!
PS> it cost more than 200-300 because there are differnt procedures for different types of veins, and the spider vein treatment usually requiers 2 or 3 visits.

LoL Robert #5,
If you believe people get cosmetic surgery solely for the purpose of being "themselves" you're either delusional or oblivious.
A person's personal vanity is directly tied to the desire to be more appealing to others moreso than just themselves. Advanced civilization itself is predicated from vanity & the desire to be a power broker relative to what that power can give to you. Sexual draw is one of the tops on the list. Read some headlines of all the politicians going down the tube for lack of discretion.
Most men wouldn't give a tinker's damn how they looked if it wasn't for the appeal to draw the opposite sex. Why do you think men hit the gym first thing after a breakup of a long relationship? Yeah, it's all about them, right.
You sound sorta "dopey" to me. Go back to your liquid six pack, I'm surely not talking about your abdominal one...

Oh, God, just reading about this gives me the heebie jeebies. *shiver* I'd much rather try natural remedies to take care of the spider veins and there are several.
One of them is doing yogic inversion poses. It relieves pressure on the veins and helps lesson them.
Gotta go get upside down!

Hey Bobby#13
It's a tinker's dam... not damn.
The tinker's dam was a lead shroud which tinkers and fix-it men put over or around small holes in the bottoms of pots and pans to restore them to usefulness.
Keep up the good work Josh.

Instead of having to treat spider veins it is much easier to prevent them. The facial spider veins that many men are having removed come mainly from one common source. The sun. The UVA and UVB radiation both contribute to spider veins as well as a person being genetically inclined by having rosacea. Everybody should where sunblock everyday!! Even people that don't think they get a lot of sun still receive huge amounts of sunlight when they are driving or even just sitting by the window in their home or office. As for treating veins with laser, the pulsed-dye laser is the best option. There is also sclerotherapy to treat spider veins and varicose veins.
