Sears won't issue refund for TV paid for but never delivered
Filed under: Fraud, Consumer Complaints
Update; no thanks to Sears, Citibank officials have stepped in to resolve this dilemma. Read about it here:
Just in case you need another reason not to use a store branded credit card, a Sears card holder, Tom, is still waiting for a refund on a TV that he ordered last November at his local store. After finding out that Sears didn't have the specially priced TV he wanted in stock on Black Friday, the store agreed to order one for him. He went ahead and paid for the $1,070 TV with his store credit card.
The customer left for a week long vacation expecting to pick up his new TV upon his return. However the TV was still unavailable. At this point, he was able to negotiate a lower price on a similar TV by speaking with the manager, for which he also paid. He went home with his new TV to bask in its glow.
He soon found out that Sears had not refunded the original purchase price of $1,070 for the set he had purchased on Black Friday, a TV he has never taken delivery of. He has tried speaking to the manager at the local store as well as the customer support for his Sears card, but no one can seem to get their act together and issue a refund. Tom already disputed the charge with the "Disputes" department for his Sears Card but is consistently hung up on, as there is no hold queue for the department. Contacting the local manager has proved fruitless as well, as her phone rings continuously.
Right now the customer is out $1,070.74. It is ridiculous that no one at Sears can step outside the script to help resolve a major purchase for this man. To get closure he may find it necessary to take Sears to small claims court or to approach his State Attorney General.
In Ohio, for example, one can file a complaint online and sit back while the AG's office does all the heavy lifting for you. Tom might also call his local news team -- I am sure they have a "Call for Action" segment that this would fit into quite nicely.
He would have been well advised to use a major credit card instead of a store card for this purchase, so that he could better challenge this charge. Store cards are notorious for having high rates, and in this case have a vested interest in not helping him with the dispute.

This happened to me as well ... I bought an exercise bike online to be picked up at the store. When we went to pick up it, it was a piece of junk and we canceled the order - never picking it up. Sears charged my credit card and it took almost three months to refund my $165.00. I made weekly phone calls to Sears.com and personal visits to the store manager - neither of whom knew what to do to resolve the issue and of course sent me back and forth. I finally just called my credit card company and they resolved it for me within about four weeks. I WILL NEVER STEP FOOT IN SEARS IF IT WAS THE LAST STORE ON EARTH.

a similar thing happened to me in 1982 .
Ordered a black refrigerator for a new condo
Sears delivered it
I realized I should have ordered white
I contacted Sears and they picked up the black one and left a white one in its place...great service
Years later I was still trying to get credit for the returned refrigerator!

Ever since a middle east consortium took over Sears, their service has bottomed out. They are a sorry shell of their former self.

To the guy that would rather shop at Kohl's, Target, etc. I will give you 20 minutes to go into a Kohl's store and find ANYTHING that is made in the USA. It's 90%
China and 9% Phillipines, Dominican Republic, Guatemala,
Viet Nam, India, Bangladesh, Colombia, Mexico, Taiwan.
And these are BRAND names that you would think were
made in this country, like Dockers, Hanes, George Foreman, Farberware to name a few. T^hat is why we
buy 80% more from the Chinese than they buy from
us even though they have 5 times as many people!

I have a good story. We purchased a refrigerator from Sears and it was delivered. Two months later, they showed up and left another one. It took two months more to get them to come and get the extra one. Then, they credited our account for the returned one. Another two months passed and they got the account right. Two months passed and they called to tell us our fridge was in and I hung up, called the credit dept and cancelled my card. They tried to deliver the fridge, but I left a sign that said, ________ have moved and left no forwarding address. This worked! Haven't been to Sears in five years.....they are scary!

Sears has messed me over on a TV this last summer too. I bought a TV for my sister after the sales associate checked it was in stock. Once I paid for it and drove my car to the pickup area it was "SOLD". I was pretty mad since 1)the Sears clerk had checked that the particular TV I wanted was in stock. 2)I had been there for 2 hours. SO I got a good price on a similar TV from the store manager. They assured me that they refunded the first purchase. I asked them for a credit receipt. They gave me one. I then purchased another TV and drove home with it. Next day I call my CC company to make sure the first purchase was voided and they say no. I then call Sears and the manager says he'll look into it. After that it's been 4 months of calling them and they still have not refunded my money. I am now going through the fraud dept of my CC to fight this through.
NO MORE SEARS

Very sad that Sears has come to this.....we ordered a range back in the 80's. The model we bought wasn't available so Sears sent a more expensive, smooth-top range in it's place...for the same price! Now THAT'S service!

I bought an entire Kitchen from Sears. The refrigerator makes an ungodly racket and the doors don't even come close to alignment. I was told it would go away in 60 days or so. When it didn't I was over the 60 day return period and hey-it's just noise-right?
After dozens of calls-5 service calls and untold minutes waiting to finally get hung up on-they told me that's just the way it is. ACTUALLY told me KENMORE is a crap brand now and they make noise-tough!
Always thought KENMORE was a good one-NOW I have to live long enough to be able to buy my next kitchen somewhere else.
I will never enter a Sears again.

Well I don't hate sears and find many things that I like about them like the quality of their appliances. However, we too had an issue with Sears and I don't believe it's the store so much as the management involved because they get bonuses based on sales and if you want your money back they get dunned that amt. We bought $9,000 worth of appliances for our new place we built and every time they were going to deliver it they charged us again so when the bill was up to 27,000.00 we started getting calls.. Yes at one pt when the bill was again down to 13,000 they wanted money and I told them no. I bought 9,000.00 worth of appliances why should I pay more? I can return them all and buy them someplace else if they prefer... They didn't want that. We finally went into the store with the receipts that we had and the managers got it straightened out but the bottom line was nobody wanted to give up the commissions. We did get it fixed and all was well and the appliances are worth it in the long run.

SEARS SUCKS.... don't buy anything from them they are as bad as BEST BUY! You cannot return anything even if you have the receipt. I have not shopped at Sears or BUST BUY FOR YEARS NOW..... I've found much better pricing and service at Circut City for electronics and believe it or not... Wallmart gets a thumbs up for their ablity to address issues with their associates and the earth friendly products... currently being made in the US. BUSH SUCKS TOO!

I AM SO SURPRISED THAT SEARS DIDN'T CREDIT HIM FOR HIS T.V. I AM GOING TO THINK TWICE BEFORE BUYING FROM SEARS AS WELL AS USING MY SEARS CHARGE. PEOPLE WORK VERY HARD FOR THEIR MONEY. THE CHARGE COMPANY'S JUST LOVE TO SEE INTEREST ADDING UP. THEY DON'T CARE, "ITS NOT COMING OUT OF THEIR POCKETS!". I AM SO SORRY FOR MR. BILL DOLLAR'S DILEMA. I HOPE SEARS READS ALL OF THESE COMMENTS & CHANGES THEIR POLICIES.

Several years ago we also had a problem with Sears and a return. It took 2 years of dealing with incompetent people to get the situation corrected. We have not been in a Sears store nor purchased any Sears product since 1998.

Thanks for telling me that Sears owns K-Mart - now, I'll never shop there again, either!
Several years ago,I called Burlington, Vermont, Sears for service on a Kenmore stove. When the repairman called to set up the appointment, I asked if he wanted the part number - he said no, because he would have any part he might possibly need. When he arrived and looked at the stove, he said that he didn't have the part, and would have to come back the next day. And I WAS BILLED FOR TWO SERVICE CALLS, A TOTAL OF TWO HOURS, FOR A FIFTEEN- MINUTE JOB! ! ! It came out to $160.00 per hour for the job! ! ! Sears? NEVER AGAIN! ! !

Cathey,
sorry to hear you encountered problems with Sears. In future, when you have problems with an order/purchase, always let your credit card company handle it. This is one of the many reasons I prefer using a credit card, even if I have cash. I don't work for Sears, but why not give them another chance? Perhaps it was not Sears but those particular workers at that particular Sears.
