Owww! James Brown estate is on the block - Hit me!
Papa's gotta brand new bag....Or maybe you're interested in something else? The pickings promise to be funky when the singer James Brown's estate goes on the block in July.
Court-appointed estate representatives have selected 394 lots to be sold by New York auction house Christie's International by Aug. 1.
According to press accounts, a judge ordered in February that the singer's posessions and homes be auctioned off to pay legal and tax bills. Christie's estimates his home and the stuff in it to be worth some $1.5 million. The Big Pay Back, indeed.
But it's still a man's world out there, and the list has already drawn the ire of the singer's many children and Tomi Rae Hynie Brown, who may or may not be his fourth and last wife.
Presuming the auction goes forward (like a night train), what can you reap from the Godfather of Soul? A 1974 Mercedes Sedan, (valued at $25,000). A 1941 Lincoln Continental ($35,000). 78 pairs of shoes and boots ($15,00).
I'd feel good with that 1962 Red Thunderbird (valued at $30K). .Although with things getting a little tight these days, I might have to make do with something else, such as one of the 590 listed "accessories," which includes socks, gloves, scarves and, er underwear.
Man enough to be a sex-machine like Brother James? Check out the full listing of what's available at the auction here (PDF file).

It is only fair that his taxes & bills have to be paid. He had the money to take care of this. It is unfortunate that it has come to this. The general public has to pay all taxes and bills before any property is distributed etc. I cannot believe they haven't proved whether Toni is his legal wife or not.

It is a shame that entertainers do not pay their taxes while living....then this type of thing would not happen to the memory of a great entertainer, as James Brown was...No matter what his personal life was like with the women and the kids.....

I guess no one wants to comment...He should be worth $500 million just on his record label alone.

Just so people understand. The tax issue concerns estate tax not income tax. Estate is payable upon the transfer of the estate to the heirs. Its payable after 9 months in cash, which is why you see estate sales at auctions and in the paper. A $10 Million estate with no type of tax shelter would entail $5 Million in taxes. So James Brown was not negligent with the taxes on the income he made during his lifetime. He was negligent on the proper trusts/insurance that would have been needed to pass on his estate without tapping it for taxes. FYI

James Brown was marginally talented as a performer. And, even less of a decent human being given how he treated his family and handled his business.

What's really shameful is, that a famous and well loved man such as James Brown is remembered this way. Mr. James Brown is a house hold name and to end it all this way is just such a shame. I do realize that most of the drama was cause by the man himself but it's all still sad.

No offence, but you don't have a clue, Victoria.
I'm not going to comment on his private life, as there's a lot of speculation and I don't know the full story.
I will say this though.
He is not my favourite musician ever, but I will acknowledge him as the single most influential musician of the last 50 years, easily!
Just about any musician of any note will mention JB as an influence, from jazz to rock to pop and everywheere in between. From Jimi Hendrix to Herbie Hancock to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers to Justin Timberlake.
One memorable moment was when the Rolling Stones were terrified to take the stage after James Brown had performed during a variety show in the mid 60's, such was the electricity that JB could generate whenever he performed.
Peace!
