2008 Comeback Stories: Silicone is back in
Filed under: Sex Sells, Health
This post is part of our series on people, places and things that have found new life in 2008.
Silicone breast implants, after falling into disfavor in the early 90's on claims that they caused various diseases including cancer, are back. In their latest incarnation, a safer fourth-generation "gummybear' silicon material, they are expected to grow to a $620 million product by 2012.
Plastic surgery has never been more popular, thanks to television shows like Extreme Makeover and Dr. 90210. Led by the creepy Dr. Robert Rey, the show Dr. 90210 shows young men and women that they can look however they want with just a cut of the knife and a few nauseating comments from the doctor about how gorgeous their boobs are.
One of the most popular plastic surgery procedures is undoubtedly breast implants. In late 2006, the Food and Drug Administration approved silicone gel implants, deeming them safe and effective. Although silicone had been accused of causing certain medical problems/symptoms in the past, doctors using the implants now say that they are safe. Women who get silicone breast implants no longer just get an increased size. They get a product that now feels more natural than ever.
And silicone implants aren't just for your boobs anymore. They can be used all over your body: from cheeks to lips to butts. Depending upon which body part the implant is used for, its consistency may be a little different to give it the most natural look possible. Aren't you glad that you can now sculpt your body using silicone practically anywhere? You can have the body you always wanted without any hard work... if you're willing to go under the knife. No thanks.

I think it is so so sad that women cannot be happy in the body they were given. I think it is more sad that men like touching bags of silicon
Ladies if he did not like you with small breasts what is he really liking? it still is not you! Why go through the risks? for plastic?
wow! I would hope we are more than sex. all you are doing is making other people rich while you say I am not good enough as I was created

If you think it's so sad, why don't you talk to my wife. 2 kids later and her breasts are sagging a bit and SHE doesn't like that. The body she was given is not the same one that she had after having children. are we done being narrow minded now?

Char,
It is really not about what the men think. Women with small breasts feel inferior. You can't even purchase a bra or buy a dress that fits correctly. You have to feel good about yourself and what you see in the mirror.

You are forgetting women whose bodies have been deformed by disease or accident. Due to paralysis on my left side from the waist down, thanks to a disease I had as a small child (polio) (I'm sure dating myself, aren't I?), my left buttox is much smaller than my right. Nothing has ever fit right. Add to that a recent, large loss of weight, my whole body, including my face, has gone south. I'd give anything to be able to AFFORD plastic surgery, including silicone implants in my face and butt. My point is, some of us women have good reason for not liking our bodies!

it is no different from getting braces on your teeth. we do this mainly for looks. So why not breasts?
Not everyone gets implants for a male. Sometimes they get them to look better for themselves.

I agree with Rod.. I am a 50 year old woman and 2 kids later. I was tired of going to buy bras with wire and padding just to look normal. Believe me if I still looked the same AFTER having kids as I did before, there would be no need however I didn't. After my surgery a year ago I have never felt better about myself. I did it for me not for a man and I truly believe that should be the reason. I have absolutely no regrets, The only regret that I have was to not do it earlier in my life.

AMEN Rod.
I, after 18 yrs of marriage, THREE kids(whom I breast fed) and a recent weight loss of 100 EXTRA lbs( last yr this time I was 250+/3X) I would like my breasts to look somewhat "normal" again. I'm 40 and too young for these saggy "Grandma boobs"! If my nipples were eyes I'd be looking at the floor ALL the time!
I've been under the knife for the gastric-by-pass(June/07) so I guess I would be willing to get upgraded breasts too. It is MY CHOICE! I would NEVER do it for a man, but I would do it for ME.
No matter how much I work out my "girls" will still need a lift somehow, and these implants are most likely the way to do it, I don't need a size increase just enough to lift them, NO ONE needs HUGE hooters(I'll agree with Char there). I was a 38/40 DD(big, heavy and they were hurting my back), I'd be happy as a 36 B (just enough to look like a grown woman and still be comfortable).
I've seen those tiny gals with inhanced boobs the size of decent melons, and I have to laugh, they don't look "normal" or "natural". I know they're going to have ALL kinds of back and shoulder problems later.
Char- I'm glad you like women as they are that is good and healthy, but if SHE wants to change it, she will and that is HER choice. She has that right. Doe's THIS help you to see things in a different light now?!

I have NEVER had breasts! I am over forty and have lived a life of shame and embarrassment all of those years. I cannot even change in front of my husband. If I had the money I would do it in a New York second for ME! I wear padded and push up bras and have never been able to wear a formal or low cut dress or top. It is the most humiliating life and I have hated it all of these years!

As a woman who has silicone breast implants, I disagree Char. I did it for ME, not a man. I have 7 children, after breastfeeding each one, my 36D breasts went to a almost non-existant couldn't fill a A cup size. I was very unhappy with how they had went south after breastfeeding my 7 children. I opted for the Memory Gel implants and they are not hard, they look and feel natural. It was the best decision I had ever made. When I had my boobs done I also had a tummy tuck done to remove the excess skin from my pregnancies (I gained 100lbs with each child). Again, best decision I ever made. It boosted my self esteem tremendously. Don't bad mouth something that you haven't had to do. I was once like you...very against breast implants etc. That all changed when I saw the toll my body suffered.

It's not about our husbands it's about how we feel in our bodies. I had a very large baby and I was very small and due to my weight gain my breast went south afterwards. My husband was and is very happy with me both before and after. It was my decision to have them done for myself, I mean after all I have to look at myself without clothes on also.I just had mine filled not lifted and I do feel much happier with myself. People can't even tell I have had anything done because I just wanted to have them pumped back up after they, well no other word defleted. It's not all about making your body fake. It's how the women feels about herself, your husband can tell you a millon times you look great and loves evrything about you, but come on we have to look in the mirror and we always see diffirent then they do. My husband loves me no matter what and supports me and that's what matters.

Ladies, When you eventually get sick from the implants and your Doctor can't help you, educate yourself and get support from Humanticsfoundation.com The chemicals in implants might not affect you at first or for a long time, but when it does, it is devastating because alot of Doctors don't know about the toxic reactions of silicone in the body or how to help Women that are experiencing problems.
They helped save my life after having implants for 10 years and getting deathly ill. I had saline, but they grew mold and my body reacted as well to the silicone shell of the implant . It frightens me to think where I might be, had it not been for the help of all the women that have gone through this already and my Naturopath helping me to detox my body in the aftermath. They share they're stories ,painful as they are, to help the next one affected by this hush hush toxic chemical industry.

I had to have lumps removed that fortunately weren't cancerous. They removed all my breast tissue and put in silicone. A couple years later the silicone shell ruptured on one. I had to have them both removed and replaced. I was told when the first ones were put in that the Gel would not leave the breast area. After surgery I ask the Dr. If he was able to get all of the gel and he said that there was none in the breast area only the outer shell. I asked where it went and he shrugged his shoulders. The silicone is not bio degradable and went into my body. At the time the second set of silicone was put in they were aware of the health risk and didn't tell me. I now have chronic leukemia along with other health issues. I was healthy and all had firm muscles I am now flappy from the connective tissue and other illnesses. I had to have the second set removed to try and get better and they put in saline. After 15 years or more they finally settled with us I received less than 50,000 and that was a slap in the face. We were left with health problems and bills up the wazoo. I strongly would tell anyone to get the saline. When the silicone ruptures you don't know right away because it is gel and it leaks for years into your system. Where as the saline you know if one has ruptured and the saline is safe. I had one of the saline rupture and had them replaced and for years now have been fine. They have a double thick shell. For anyone having silicone now you have to sign a release and you have no recourse if something goes wrong. That is because of the law suit. As for the person who said be happy with your body I was and am. Not everyone has implants done for catching the almighty male eye. They wanted to make mine larger and I refused. I was under 30 when I had my first 10 hour surgery and trust me it wasn't cosmetic. PLEASE DON'T PUT IN SILICONE

To be completely honest...i had implants "installed" on Nov 29, 2007. I opted for Saline... my best friend got her breats done a week before me and she opted for silicone. While the silicone feel more natural to the touch and saline are hard as rock I was informed of all the risks associated with both types (and trust me they both have their ups and downs). He assured me that silicone implants do NOT cause cancer ect... they are a little more dangerous if it pops...and they ALL POP eventually. I love my new boobs and couldnt be happier (went from a 32AA to a 34D in 2 hours!) I love plastic! I wouldnt do any other procedure... botox, face lift, lipo ect... I just wanted breasts because being 23 years old with a tiny frame I was constantly confused for a 14 yr old girl... emabrassing!
EIther way... I am not surprised to hear that silicone has come back. They have made it safer than ever. There are waranties on all impants now so if they do pop they are replaced free of charge (within a certain time frame of course) These things dont last forever... they must be maintained just like everything else!

Good for you Julie, What ever makes you feel good about yourself I agree with you. As a man I have been with women with both types of implants, a true man, lover would not care which one feel more firm or natural. I feel they are both the same, so do not worry!

As a 57 year old man, balding but still in good shape and good looks but age has crept up a bit I find mwn as well as women do this for the wrong reason. But as we are all human there are two different reason to have implants. Cosmetic and vanity. For men the hair plugs are vanity, for penis implants it could be for medical reason but I feel mainly vanity. Women it is more so Vanity then health. BUT what ever the reason I feel the FDA should have kept them off the market. Saline (salt) water implants do feel better to the touch, look nicer AND are safer. I guess we do need a change in american government. To chnage the laws in the FDA is one of the hardest to do. To political etc. So what we have to see here is more women who will suffer in great pain when they leak. Why would anyone put plastic in there body, would you eat it? No I do not think so but vanity becomes a drug we can hardly resist. So we need to Change: and change is when the pain becomes greater then the fear of letting go.

My sister-in-law died from silicone breast implants in November, 2007. She suffered a horrible and agonizing year before she died. I caution anyone considering silicone breast implants.
