BENTONVILLE, Ark. (Oct. 1) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, said Wednesday it will lower the price of several toys in 3,500 stores across the U.S. ahead of a holiday season which is expected to be subdued.
Retailers across the board are expecting consumers to rein in spending this season, amid rising food and gas prices, turmoil in the financial markets and a prolonged housing slump.
Wal-Mart said it will cut prices on 10 popular toys to $10 each, including certain Barbie Dolls, Play-Doh Ice Cream Shop, some Hot Wheels toys and Bakugan by Spin Master, a game many experts cite as one of the "hot" toys this year.
It will also open Christmas shops within its stores over the next 10 days, which will offer deals such as an ornament value pack for $5.
Wal-Mart said it conducted a survey that showed consumers will start Christmas shopping earlier this year and make other changes to stretch holiday dollars.

In addition to shopping year around and storing up bargain items, we also 'make our own lay-away' year around. Every week I put money on a Walmart giftcard. Every time we get up to $100 on one, we put it away...so that we are never carrying a gift card with all of our Christmas on it....in case of loss or theft. Then, as the Christmas season approaches I begin shopping online and in the store for the most requested items. We began doing this the year that Walmart did away with its lay-away program. We start the first Friday in January and continue until the 2nd Friday in December....although we start spending them before that date---such as right now I have already used some cards to purchase an electric scooter and 2 other wishlist items. We live a completely debt-free life....so this is the best way for me to know that I have several hundred dollars to shop with and it is all paid for in advance with no worries of how to buy gifts or how to pay off debts after the holidays. Last year I did 80% of my Christmas shopping online and saved a lot of money.I compared the prices with retailers and found that even when the cost shipping was equal to the retail cost the savings came from not having to drive (GAS) and of course deal with the crowds, and it was all delivered right to my house with only one instance of damage out of dozens of packages which I returned and It was replaced without any problem. EBAY was a fantastic source for the majority of my purchases, but AMAZON and CRAIGS LIST as well as other sources were great. I found many instances where FREE shipping was available. My goal this year is to buy 100% online and I'm well on my way.

JINX1105, before you all pay off the mortgage please speak to an accountant and see how it will affect your parents tax liability. This is a gift and someone will have to pay the gift tax and not to mention a large part of paying less taxes is the interest expense for the loan to the house. It would be a wonderful gift but if it is going to cost your parents more in taxes (depending on their taxable income) then find another gift. Alot of people think that their gifts have no tax consequences but it does. For instance when a parent leaves a house to a child-it can be devastating in tax liability but the gift was from the heart. Find out whom does your parents taxes and talk to that CPA before paying off the mortgage because losing the interest deduction may hurt more than it helps even though its a beautiful thought.

All those plastic inflatables usually end up laying "dead" on people's front lawns by Christmas. Why would any reasonable person set up such an ugly thing. I can't think of a single setting where one ever looked good before it's "death" and all of them certainly look shabby after.

At this point, buying anything that says "made in China" is an act of treason.

Rob, I completely understand and agree with your point about the retail industry. People are more into material things these days than the actual meaning of Christmas. But on another note, the tradition of Santa Claus is fun and we enjoy seeing the surprised looks on our children's faces when they wake up on Christmas morning. Because we participate in that tradition doesn't mean that we neglect the real meaning. It's just added fun. =) At least that is how it is for my family.
