Where's my stimulus check? Oh, now they tell me...
Last week I vented my frustration at the IRS, the government, George Bush -- anyone! -- when I wrote, Where's my stimulus check. The post hit a nerve apparently, drawing thousands of page views and hundreds of comments.I was supposed to receive my family's $1,800 economic stimulus check via direct deposit on May 9. But the day came and went with little fanfare...and even less money. That's the day I wrote the post.
Today, a full week later, Turbo Tax sends me an email. The salient section:
Dear Valued Customer,
We want to provide you with the most up–to–date information about the tax rebate to which you may be entitled.
Recently, you may have received a letter from the IRS advising you when to expect your Economic Stimulus Payment (rebate). That IRS letter may have inadvertently left off some important information. Taxpayers who chose to have their tax preparation fees deducted from their federal tax refund will receive their tax rebate in the mail, not via direct deposit.
I like the "inadvertently left off some important information" phrase. This is because that information was most definitely NOT on the IRS website before last week. I'd gone through the information on the site carefully several times earlier, in my duties as an editor for this blog (not to mention as a self-interested beneficiary of monies myself...). Indeed, because there was originally no such stipulation, I let myself get all excited for my May 9th windfall.
More frustrating, however, is that, judging from the many comments, there are plenty of people who did pay an electronic filing fee and did receive their payment as scheduled. Without further information from the IRS clarifying exactly what an electronic filing fee means to it, we're left to suspect that the payout is alarmingly random.
So. Now the "check is in the mail," but I've learned my lesson. I'll believe it when I see it. And until I see it, allegedly around June 20, I have to wonder what other clauses the IRS might slip in there. Families with brown-haired children won't get a check until 2009? Women under 5.4 will get cash, delivered by courier monkey, unless they have blue eyes, in which case they can find it under a rock in Farmer McGivern's field down the road....
Stay tuned! Have you gotten yours?

I also was excited that we should have our check direct deposited yesterday...only to go to my online banking site and find nothing! I too deducted the filing fees for Turbo Tax from my refund check and now am being delayed in getting our rebate check! That's really stupid and you are right, there was nothing telling us this in the media or in print prior to my going to the IRS.gov website yesterday! This was going to be our vacation money for next month, but now I had to take money from a Mutual Fund to pay for the gas to get to the beach!

I am also curious how much money the Federal government spent on printing and mailing the "announcement" that we all received about the "stimulus package", as if all of the tax payers in our county live under a rock and do not have free access to print, radio, and television that profusely covered this new program. When Uncle Sugar wants his money, you had better cough it up, but when you're owed, he moves like the molasses in winter.

We didn't get our rebate check either, and we did not have tax prep fees. We had gotten a letter saying our check should be direct deposited by May 9th and nothing has happened. It's really funny how the government can do this - but let the average citizen be a week late paying a bill and see what happens!!! Nice job, George!

It did say in an article I read "if you had fees deducted your check would be sent. What is everybody complaining about? It's money you woundn't have received without the Bush's stimulus payment. If you have a problem with it, send the check back!!!!!!

Are you for real?
Why do you feel entitled to get money for nothing? The wealthy already are paying close to 40% of everything they make just so lazy unemployed low lifes can sit on their front porches and wait for their welfare checks! And you are wanting the tax payers to hand out 8-10% more? And these same low lifes will always vote democrat to ensure that all those entitlement programs keep coming!
what we need to do is get rid of this ghetto, entitlement, attitude. stop giving handouts to lazy people and make them go to work!

I got my check today and I got the same letter as the rest of you. The letter was very specific about who would get it an when and I got mine exactly three days after the date they said they would be mailing them. Read everything before bashing someone else and be grateful your getting something. Yes some people "paid" for their program electronically but they did not have that amount deducted from what they were getting back. Big difference there. I'm spending mine tomorrow.

THE IRS REPORTED THAT SOME 1,500 STIMULUS PAYMENTS WERE DIRECTED DEPOSITED INTO WRONG ACCOUNTS. SOME REPORTS BLAME THE PROBLEM ON A COMPUTER GLITCH. THE IRS SAYS THAT IT CAN'T NECESSARILY PIN THE ISSUE ON A COMPUTER PROBLEM.
YOU ARE URGED TO CHECK ANY PAYMENTS RECEIVED CAREFULLY TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE ACTUALLY YOURS.
IF YOU RECEIVED A CHECK OR INACCURATE (OR DUPLICATE) DIRECT DEPOSIT YOU ARE REQUIRED BY LAW TO MAIL THE CHECK BACK TO THE IRS OR REPORT THE ISSUE TO YOUR BANK. IF YOU SPENT THE MONEY AND IT WAS NOT DUE YOU, YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY THAT MONEY BACK.
NEWS DAY CITED AMAN IN LONG ISLAND FOUND $1,800. IN HIS BANK ACCOUNT. THE MAN CHECKED WITH HIS BANK AND FOUND THE DEPOSIT BELONGED TO SOMEONE WITH A DIFFERENT SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER.

We also were to receive the rebate on May 9th and did not. Also, we did not have the tax deduction fee. Now what?

If you paid the fees up front instead of having them deducted from your refund, you should get your rebate by direct deposit on the earlier set of dates. If the fees were deducted from your refund, then you will get a paper check and be on that schedule.
I was in the same boat (expecting to see $1500 magically appear in my account on the 9th, only to learn that I will have to wait for a check to arrive about a month later.) I was disappointed, but seriously people, this is like free money. It just goes to show that people who want to complain about something will always find an opportunity to do so. If waiting an extra month is too much trouble, feel free to forward your rebates to me.

I too had the same thing happen. My wife's car died and we took our house payment and bought a new car thinking our check would be in the bank on the anticipated date. We bought the car and found out by e-mail from turbo tax ,on the day the check should arrive, that since we had our fees deducted we would get it in the mail. My soc# is used and I don't get mine til the week of July 11th. Now I am behind a month on the house and am hocking family posessions to pay the bills. Thanks IRS.

Hey folks remember we ARE talking about the government here!! did you really expect it to be on time and easy to get this free money?? LOL>> If you have lived here very long you know the old saying about the government....Hurry up and wait!!! I have not even bothered to look and see when I am suppose to get my money. I am still not believing I WILL get it so I am NOT counting it yet. Remember what some of us were taught as children....do not count them chickens until the eggs hatch and then expect to lose a few. Enjoy your money, make it last, and just expect it when you see it in the mail!!!

I am a little P.O.'d at how I still haven't received my stimulus check either. I did direct deposit and nope I did not deduct the fees from my refund - so where the heck is it?! *Sigh*
Not very sure when I'll get it or if I will ever get it but man, this sucks for our government to mess up a simple direct deposit - what bigger thing can they eff up?

I hear you all squaking that you received a letter and haven't received your direct deposit or check. Well I haven't even received a letter yet! So consider yourselve's lucky you're the first in line. It's my understanding that the rebates are being issued on a numeric basis based upon your social security number.

My SNN ends in the lower digits and according to their little chart I should have gotten my payment early in May. Here it is a month later, and still no letter or payment!! I live with my GF and she got a letter and a payment on time! The only difference is she didn't owe tax this year and I did. So I'm thinking that those of us who had to owe, have to wait longer. IRS never mentioned that at all, but it seems to be a plausible reason since our returns were sent to different addresses. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't come until September...
