Where's my economic stimulus check?
Filed under: Borrowing, Budgets, Debt, Shopping, Tax, Relationships
I hate sitting by the phone, so to speak, but my mail carrier came and went today and there is no sign of my economic stimulus check.I was a loud and bitchy critic of the economic stimulus plan from the start. It always seemed more politics than fiscal responsibility (but then when was this Republican administration ever about smaller government and fiscal prudence?). What's $600 going to do for the average debt-burdened consumer? Buy a month of groceries? Notch down one credit card? Yeah, I rolled my eyes and ranted and raved.
And then I figured out that I would be getting $1,800. That's $1,200 for being married and filing jointly, and $300 for each kid. My husband and I looked at each other sheepishly. Then we launched into the Happy Happy, Joy Joy dance.
According to the IRS, I should be receiving this windfall no later than today, May 9. This, I gleaned from the site, because of the last two digits of my Social Security number, the fact that I filed electronically in March and had my return direct deposited into my account.
And so we waited. "You'll probably see it earlier," my husband told me. "There were news reports that the first wave of people got theirs earlier in the week than expected." He then optimistically did his part for the economy by spending his half on a new laptop, since his old one had just died.
"President Bush thanks you for being a good American" I sneered. Then I went out last weekend and let myself get carried away at the mall, spending $160 on clothes I wouldn't otherwise have spent, all because I knew my economic stimulus check was coming the next week to cover me.
But where is the money? As a freelance writer, I'm used to the proverbial "check is in the mail" waiting game. But I also know that radio silence is cause for suspicion. So this morning I went back to the IRS site, and clicked on its tool, "Where's my stimulus payment?" I plugged in my information.
I don't expect much when it comes to forthcoming government information. But hope springs eternal. Alas, up pops this message: Not any information on this taxpayer."
Then I notice this cryptic note, "If filing or preparation fees were deducted from your 2007 refund, or you received a rapid refund, you will be receiving a check instead of a direct deposit."
So...the $30 electronic filing fee I paid Turbo Tax means I won't be getting my money today? That's the first I'd heard of that stipulation. I check the paper check payment schedule.
June 20.
I feel a little like a jilted date. He said he'd call and he didn't. Really, I should know better by now. Monies promised should never be anticipated or waited on. And I'm feeling a little foolish because hey, I thought this was a bad idea to begin with. That didn't stop me from quickly spending more than was in my budget though. I guess that makes me a "better" American than I thought I was.
So have you gotten your stimulus money yet? What are you doing with it. Really...

they didn't say if you e-filed then you get a paper check. they said if you paid turbo tax out of your refund, you do. it's different.

I was foolish enough to "count on" so to speak this money. I am far to mature to fall into this trap, but its like when you find 20 bucks in your coat pocket, you're eager to spend it. I understand the addition made to the (FAQ) portion of the Stimulus page. I find it does make sense, however I feel the majority of Americans like myself were mis-lead.
However I feel we can only blame ourselves for our misunderstanding, thus said Turbo Tax (which i used and yes had my fees paid through my deposit) should have notified its valued customers initially.
As mentioned in this blog earlier, some users of "Turbo Tax" received their monies on schedule. My brother used "Turbo Tax", paid his fees with his Credit Card. I learned my lesson now.
I am going to put my stimulus money into Savings anyway, but I spent money on the ever rising Airline prices to see my sister Graduate. We all can thank our ever shady media for the misrepresentation of these monies.

Typical American: Pointing their nose up to a government program until it benefits them more than they thought. Failing to read the fine print as to what the program entails while running off to spend money they still don't have. And then we wonder why our country is in trouble economically. I got my rebate as expected based on my calculations and reading all the stipulations, and I have yet to spend or invest the money until I decide on the best use for it. Don't be like this writer or like what Bush actually wants you to do with the checks (throw the money in the trash right away at stores) -- use it to actually help your financial situation for a change.

I actually did read all the stimpulations, BUT the one in reference to "If you had any preparation fees deducted from your refund, or opted for rapid refund" you WILL BE RECEIVING a paper check not DIRECT DEPOSIT was added to the irs.gov.ca website 5/5/08. After many people including myself, spent money prior because we depended upon the 1st information posted "THE PAYMENT SCHEDULE" which was added to their website mid March 2008. We all BELIEVED in the government that the DATE they referenced PER THE LAST 2 DIGITS OF your social security number IS THE DATE YOU'LL GET YOUR REBATE VIA DIRECT DEPOSIT. Who would've thought the GOVERNMENT would change the plan at hand knowing MANY not just A FEW would spend money prior to receiving the REBATE BELIEVING they'd receive money on the Date advised. So NOW that WE'RE ALL IN MORE DEBT than before, ONCE we receive OUR PAPER CHECKS (for me End of July, originally anticipating 5/16/08 Direct Deposit) WE'RE really in the same spot financially before they announced the rebate "BROKE" and living check to check

As a human we have the right and the abilty to comment on things...such is life! Especially when we are dealing with financial and political issues. I for one have mixed feeling about the situation, becuase the goverment never says what they mean and mean what they say. Meaning we were told everyone will get the checks in May okay I know its just the beginning of may but now we have all theses dates and stipulations on why we wont get them as soon as we thought. You dont know peoples financial situations either to make them feel like we should not respond the way we are. We are not only americans we are human. deal with it!

Well said, Andrew. I completely agree that people should use this money for their own financial gain not just blow it on garbage they otherwise wouldn't purchase.
I received mine today which is exactly when I calculated that it should arrive. Every dime has gone to the savings and will remain there until it needs to be spent on something necessary.

I have not received mine either. I was suppose to have it today, and its not there. I did not see the stipulation about the turbo tax (I did taxcut). This whole thing has been stressful. I was expecting it today & no $$ for me.

Tara, I did foolish spending yesterday thinking I was getting a check today direct deposit. NO CHECK. I further did research and found out the way I did my tax cut by HR BLOCK I chose to have the filing fees withheld from check this caused a paper check which is not until June. This makes me so mad why would it matter if I had tax preparation fees deduct from 2007 tax refund if I didn't and paid upfront fees I would have my money today like scheduled. However this really is bad for me. They should not punish you. Crazy I was broke so I had the fees withheld. Reality is I'm more broke today then ever before. We all expect IRS to gives us some relief and help not punish us for being broke.

My favorite thing about this whole "Stimulus Package", a term that I feel needs to be used VERY lightly, is that it will do literally nothing to stimulate this stagnant and sputtering economy of ours. It would be interesting to see what percentage of Americans actually spent their check on something, anything, that would help stimulate our economy. I would speculate that a vast majority of people are either paying off bills, buying necessities for life, paying ever-increasing insurance rates and the like. So of the money that is actually spent on goods, that would not have otherwise been purchased, and that didn't go overseas, is what 7-10%!? If we really want to stimulate our economy, how bout we try actually buying AMERICAN MADE goods! China already owns our debt, using American assets as collateral.....let's not give them anymore. The problem started at home and the solution is here also. Think people.

If you want to track what actually happens to the "stimulus" be sure to include the fact that people who owe taxes, even if they have a payment plan in place, will have their checks sucked right back into the hands of their benevolent government. No matter that we still have to buy gas etc etc at the same price as everyone else. And that's not printed in any of the press releases either. Stimulus my eye!

Well said! Instead of spending, spending, spending, save your money or pay down your debt. This isn't the first time the country has had problems economically and it won't be the last.
You can however be prepared for whatever happens if you take care of your money wisely.

My Darling Julie, they got me too. I thought today I'd be able to redeem my slightly irregular spending, but alas..... I can not.
I too paid a fee instead of filing for free. Should have known better.

why would any one be so stupid to spend the money before they even get it? Thus being the reason why our economy is going into a recession.
