Amazon Kindle's my desire: but wait until it's cheaper!
Amazon.com's "Kindle" is sold out. At $399, the wireless reading device accesses 110,000 books. Best-sellers and new releases are $9.99. You can have the NY Times and the Wall Street Journal delivered to your Kindle.
As anyone who knows me can attest to, I regard most of life as an intrusion between me, my bed and my book. The thought of being able to access (wireless connectivity) in a taxi, at the airport, in a hotel room makes my heart pound and my mouth go dry with desire. But there's a problem. #1: $399 (with its free 2-day shipping, I'm still not impressed), #2: I don't buy this way.
I don't want to have the first edition of anything. I don't buy for status. After the first edition, there are likely to be kinks to work out and just as likely the price will come down. I buy books by the handful (I bought 8 yesterday) at thrift shops, yard sales, library sales.
So although my first impulse was to add Kindle to my cart, it won't be happening anytime soon. I will be keeping an eye out for someone using one and I'll be sure to ask to see what it's all about.
Kindle may turn out to be a conversation starter. The new singles mingles for the intelligensia. Keep an eye on it.

What funny timing...I really wanted a Kindle when they first came out, but had kind of forgotten about them. Yesterday I suddenly remembered them and went to Amazon.com to see if perhaps the price had dropped. Nope, and they're still "sold out." I looked on eBay but they're all going for more then $400. But I, like you, have to remind myself that it's wisest to wait for the next version. It will be cheaper, have less bugs, and have more features. Some of my friends are totally against the idea of a Kindle, and I get where they're coming from, but by bookshelf is bursting at the seams and when I travel, my backpack is always heavy with books. I would love to just have one device to take with me anywhere, that can be used to read all the books and magazines I want. I think it's genius, and I'm doing everything I can to resist buying one right now...By the way, if you Google the Kindle, you will find TONS of blogs reviewing it. Most of them advise waiting for the next version, so that may help with out impulses.

My boss bought me a Kindle for my birthday, we had a good year - I worked hard, and she knew I'd never purchase it for myself and I have to say, I love it, its worth it, you can't imagine all you can do with it - like, you can search for quotes, or phrases, and it takes you through all of the books you have, and... brings you to wickapedia online. It is so easy to read, you can change the font to a size you don't need your glasses for and fall asleep reading just like you do with a book (but make sure if it leaves your hand it lands on your pillow) love it love it love it - I'm going to get one for my husband - and I'm saving the environment too, not to mention when I travel I don't have to decided which books to carry, I have 18 so far- the drawback.... can't think of one, and ... no glitches, works great.
